A German court has ruled that 31-year-old Iraqi illegal migrant Muhammad A., who pushed 16-year-old Ukrainian refugee Liana K. in front of a freight train in Lower Saxony and killed her is not criminally responsible due to paranoid schizophrenia. Investigators established that the man grabbed the teenager and pushed her onto the tracks before she was struck by the train. He attempted to portray her death as an accident, but DNA evidence linked him to the victim's clothing. The Iraqi national had previously been denied asylum in Germany and was supposed to be deported to Lithuania, but remained in Germany following a court ruling. At the time of the killing, he was staying at a refugee reception center.
