Leadership requires taking risks. Mayor Hidalgo took an extreme political risk by reconfiguring so many roads in Paris' urban core, risking losing re-election. She won easily because the people embraced the change. Is DC's leadership willing to take such risk?

The most important thing about this amazing Paris transformation is how fast it happened — how fast people on bikes “appeared” — once streets were transformed. You can’t write this off as “#Paris was always this way,” because it wasn’t. It took leadership.

@kebursaw @ANCCostello @BicycleSPACE @Wash_cycle @DDOTDC Having ridden this route for 3 decades, I can attest to the often careless, dangerous, & aggressive driving by many of those piloting the shuttle busses. Many close calls, some of them deliberate. The road is so poorly engineered & desperately needs a #VisionZero remake too!

@purplepassioned @ezracycle @patbahn @alanhenney Cars weren't here 1st- people were; cars were added later & everything designed for their convenience since (primarily MD commuters BTW). That must to change to make biking & walking safe. And I'd expect drivers to be careful around other people so hope isn't required to survive.

MI used to be a bike route before the City abandoned it to a car sewer- all people deserve a safe place to move & change is needed now.
