Ghana’s transport conversation needs a rethink. We’re having extensive conversations about expanding Accra’s airport, while I keep asking: what would happen if we gave the same urgency to connecting Ghana’s major cities by rail? Accra → Koforidua → Kumasi → Sunyani → Techiman → Tamale. Accra → Cape Coast → Takoradi. Takoradi → Kumasi. These corridors already feature prominently in Ghana’s railway planning. The national Railway Master Plan proposes roughly 3,844 km of new standard-gauge railway, developed over 15 years. Checkout the Ghana Railway Master Plan⁠ And rail is already moving. The 97 km Tema–Mpakadan line is ongoing, while the Western Railway is being rehabilitated and passenger services are operating around Takoradi. Here’s the economic argument: an airport primarily expands Ghana’s international connectivity. Rail can simultaneously move workers, students, traders, tourists, agricultural products, minerals and freight across the country. A functioning rail network could also reduce pressure on our roads, shorten travel times between major cities and create new economic centres around railway stations. The important part is making the economics work. Ghana shouldn’t build passenger rail in isolation. Freight has to be part of the equation — connecting ports, mines, farms, industrial areas and major cities so the railway generates revenue throughout the day. The full railway vision is expensive. The master plan envisages thousands of kilometres of new track. That makes phased development, PPPs, freight concessions and proper maintenance critical. ⁠ So, airport or rail? The airport connects Ghana to the world. Rail connects Ghanaians to Ghana. We need both. But if the question is which infrastructure has the potential to benefit the largest number of ordinary Ghanaians, I think rail deserves a much bigger seat at the table. Imagine being able to leave Accra for Kumasi, Cape Coast, Koforidua or Takoradi by a reliable, affordable train while the same network carries Ghana’s goods in the opposite direction. That’s infrastructure with the potential to change how the entire country moves. As to whether our leaders will implement, time will tell.

Yet my country will rather contract a logistics company to transport all this on road destroying the roads in the process. Why can't we invest in our railways system, why can't we connect our major cities by rails ?
