This new AI deepfake scam shows how dangerous online trust has become. Here is the problem: Attackers compromise a real, high-profile professional’s LinkedIn account and use it to message people in tech and Web3. Because the message comes from a known person, the victim is more likely to trust it. Then the attacker sends a fake Calendly invite or a copycat meeting link that looks like Microsoft Teams. During the call, the “host” pretends their microphone is broken. They paste a line of code into the meeting chat and tell the victim to run it in Terminal or command prompt to “activate the microphone.” That script silently installs malware. It can steal browser credentials, password manager data, session tokens, and communication accounts like Telegram. Then the attacker uses the victim’s identity to repeat the scam. They create a fake meeting link under the victim’s name and use an AI-generated live deepfake face during calls to trick the victim’s contacts into running the same command. This is not normal phishing anymore. This is trust-chain exploitation. A familiar LinkedIn profile can be compromised. A meeting link can be fake. A video call can use a deepfake. A trusted contact can become the attack channel. That is why verification infrastructure matters.
