I want to thank everyone who reached out after I shared the news that my younger brother passed away. The kindness from friends and complete strangers has meant more than I can adequately express. But I don't want his story to end with an announcement that he died. My brother struggled with alcoholism. And I think his story deserves to be told—not to judge him, embarrass him, or define him by his addiction, but because there are families everywhere watching someone they love fight the same battle. Alcoholism can slowly take pieces of someone you love while they're still standing in front of you. Behind the addiction is still a person. A son. A brother. A father. A friend. Someone who laughed, dreamed, loved, struggled, and mattered. My brother mattered. In the days ahead, I may share more about him—some memories, some photographs, and perhaps some of the difficult realities of alcoholism. If his story causes even one person struggling with alcohol to ask for help, or helps one family realize they aren't alone, then perhaps something meaningful can come from an incredibly painful loss. For now, I simply want to say: I love you, little brother. I wish we had more time. And I will make sure you are remembered for far more than the battle you fought.
