The dynamic on X could improve overnight if Grok wrote profile descriptions instead of users. They should be written for the viewer’s benefit, not as marketing. If someone is a vile POS, say it. If they’re likely a bot, say it. If they create original, high-quality content, recognize it. Update the description quarterly so people can change, but viewers always know what they’re getting before they hit “Follow.”

It’s hard to articulate how a parent just makes it happen, but that has been my experience. We have two kids and one on the way. My wife’s job gives nothing for paid maternity leave. She’s basically furloughed, but can’t file for unemployment. There’s no income during her time off, we have to pay her share of benefits upfront instead of having them deducted from her paycheck, and because she’s union, her FTE will be cut from 1.0 (full-time) to .53 for the entire working year. It’s a minimum $30,000 hit to our bottom line for the year. That didn’t stop us from having a third. We’ll figure it out, even if it’s scary and the numbers don’t exactly “math” well.

Prices are absolutely out of hand, but people need to be really careful with these posts. Your complaint, or post made for content, might end up making the decision for someone on the fence about having kids who doesn’t yet know all the good things that make you adjust your life to make it happen.

@ashleyschendel I think a lot of weddings are a crafted image, and people carry that same mindset right into the relationship instead of developing together.

I see this a lot on X, especially with all the trad this and trad that, people running their dating life like an HR department. Most of what you become as a couple is going to be developed together in the relationship. You have to have the foundation to live in the mundane day to day, but more importantly, when life gets real, you’re going to want to know the right person is in that trench with you more than their willingness to cook dinner and homeschool.

Ahhh, what? Maybe more context is needed, but as someone who’s tried this, I see no way it can be successful if you’re the sole caregiver while also attempting to work. Maybe someone else is watching the kids? That kind of takes the flex out of the statement, though.

Grandparents come in a vast range of involvement. I don’t think this is generational. I watched a 60+ year old woman run around a playground for hours yesterday chasing her grandkids. It looked ridiculous, and she ended up hurt. But what lucky kids.

A cycle of good in the world. My wife works in the school system, and there was an end-of-the-year field trip to a local amusement park that cost each kid $30 to attend. One child in the entire grade didn’t get to go because his parents either couldn’t or wouldn’t pay the fee. Without a second thought, my wife paid for him and moved on with life. Flash forward to yesterday. We’ve been using our Mondays this summer to find the best parks in Minnesota and get ice cream afterward. When we got to a little ice cream stand, we discovered it was cash only. My wife reached into her bag and realized she had used $30 of her cash for the field trip fee and was now $10 short for our order. There we stood, dumbfounded, with two cones loaded with three beginning to melt scoops each. I was headed for the door to find an ATM when, without hesitation, an older woman in line pulled out a $20 bill with a smile and covered the cost. She said someone had recently paid it forward to her, and this was the perfect moment to pass it along.
