The philosophical foundations of our Republic were highly influenced by the Enlightenment. Men like Thomas Paine, far from Christian nationalists, inspired the American Revolution. The Constitution is a brilliant document that employs decentralized power as a scientific method to continually form a more perfect union. Yes, our Republic is designed to survive within a Judeo-Christian moral framework. That is reflected in the writings of the Founders. Many of those same Founders were deists who, while believing in the importance of this moral fiber, understood the danger in marrying government to the Church. The answer to your question is not found in the separation of Church and State but rather a separation of the populous from their government. By that, I mean that the predominantly Christian population gave legitimacy to the Enlightenment-inspired governmental structure that was to come. Paine was heavily influenced by Enlightenment thinkers like John Locke, who did not see political structures as divine but did view government as the protector of inalienable. There was a great deal of overlap between Christian and Enlightenment thinkers and among that was the idea of inalienable rights. It’s within this overlap that a synthesis of Enlightenment ideals and the Biblical worldview was able to create the greatest Republic in the history of the world. I concede your expertise on this subject but I do believe you’re selling the Enlightenment short in terms of America’s founding.

Not to quarrel with a professor, but while it is true that a slim minority were deists, it’s also fair to point out that the deist camp was far more quality than quantity. Thomas Paine, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, and George Washington were among their number. Paine’s Common Sense was integral in whipping up support for the Revolution. You’re also correct that the founders were more wary of marrying government to any particular denomination than to the church as a whole, but in a heavily Protestant country, that amounts to a separation of church and govt in any meaningful sense. I define Christian nationalism as theocratic governance based on Christian principles. Many of the thought leaders of that day (some of whom are listed above) did not believe the Judeo-Christian moral framework was exclusive to religious peoples, though they were utilitarian enough to recognize that a Christian society (or at least a God-fearing one) would be necessary to cultivate moral fiber strong enough to maintain a Republic.

In dark blue districts, correct. It’s not the dark blues and dark reds who tip the balance of power, though. The primary Dem vulnerability is the rise of the far left and how it will affect more purple areas. If Republicans can paint all Dems in the same extremist light they have a chance. Of course if inflation runs wild and energy prices are high it won’t matter anyway.
