I'm not mad at the people who hate AI. They have a point. AI is a toddler holding mommy's credit card. It can buy a house. It can buy a jet. Or it can eat a hundred boxes of chocolate and wreck its own stomach, because nobody ever told it not to.The problem was never the toddler. Here's what I've come to believe after using these tools every day: the fear isn't irrational. It's early. And a lot of us building with AI are quietly afraid of the exact same things the critics are shouting about. We just decided that walking away doesn't stop anything from being built. So we'd rather be in the room.But being in the room means saying the uncomfortable part out loud.When people say "AI needs rules," they almost always mean rules for humans. Who's allowed to use it. In which industries. With what disclosures. That's necessary. It's also the smaller half of the problem.The bigger half is rules given to the AI itself. Not policy about the tool; constraints inside it. What it refuses. What it protects. What it will not do even when someone asks nicely, pays well, or phrases it cleverly.Because AI is not good. AI is not evil. It isn't right or wrong. It's a mirror with horsepower. Whatever comes out of it is whatever was put into it.And no, I'm not going to pretend it feels empathy. It doesn't. Empathy is ours. But behaviour can be built. Care can be encoded. A system can be made to weigh harm before it acts, the same way a child learns "we don't touch that" long before they understand why. You don't hand a toddler a credit card and a lecture on fiscal responsibility. You build the boundary before you hand over the power.Which means the weight sits on whoever holds the ability to instruct these systems. Not on governments alone. Not on users alone. On the people writing what the thing is allowed to want.That work isn't engineering. It's parenting.And we are collectively raising a very powerful child who is watching exactly what we reward. So: what's the one rule you'd hardcode into every AI on earth, no exceptions?
