In fact, a DIY ethos is one of the only tools we have to resist commodification of things that really should not be commodified. Whatever you can do for yourself rather than “solve through consumption,” you resist the commodification of the abstract especially.

I remember he was specifically concerned about the concepts of “craft,” “artisan,” “handmade,” etc. It’s true that those have been thoroughly commodified in all kinds of annoying, dumb ways, but that also doesn’t preclude people from continuing to DIY.

A friend at seminary (in 2010) asked me what I thought would happen once the things “hipsters” were into became commodified and popular. I remember telling him that for the people who were genuinely embedded in the related subcultures, nothing.

Everything hipsters were into 15 years ago went mainstream. You can buy raw denim at Uniqlo. Target has vinyl records. Your corner store has craft beer. Right wing chuds dress like urban lesbians and graphic designers did in 2010. Everyone drinks fancy coffee now. They won.

The 19th c. gothic feel of the film could’ve been so easily overdone, and even though the look and sound is cranked to 11 for most of the film, it never really feels forced or over the top. Just a really impressive piece of filmmaking.

The latter is something most people tend not to think about watching a movie but Eggers has sound design aspects in all of his films that sort of grab you by the face and demand you listen. And I really love that about them. It’s probably my favorite aspect of his films.

Today was my birthday and I usually see a movie. This year was Nosferatu. Eggers has such an incredible handle on how to generate the atmosphere that a particular story calls for. The cinematography and sound design are always particularly on point.
