How was the UCH hijab story? Abeg. It is not even the education side alone. How about the Islamic bank story?

There was a time in the history of this country when Muslims were systematically denied access to education simply because of their faith. They were often presented with a stark choice: convert to Christianity or forgo schooling entirely. This injustice left deep scars on our community, and many of us have heard firsthand accounts from those who endured it directly. This discriminatory trend did not end with outright denial. The colonial and post-colonial education system was deliberately packaged with evangelism. Secular knowledge came bundled with Christian doctrine, acquire one, and the other was imposed “by fire or by thunder,” as the saying goes. Even when guidance ultimately belongs to Allah (SWT), the impact was profound. While many Muslims held firm to their faith and some non-Muslims embraced Islam, a significant number of our people gradually drifted away. The process was especially effective because it was subtle, pervasive, and often unnoticed even by Muslim parents. Organisations such as the Ahmadiyyah, Ansar-ud-Deen, Nawair-ud-Deen, and a few others rose courageously to the challenge. Yet they could not match the resources of well-funded multinational missionary institutions and a government largely led by elites trained in the same evangelising system. As a result, Muslim children were frequently placed at a disadvantage, and prejudice became entrenched. Many of us recall our own childhood experiences. Our parents, seeking what they believed were “neutral” schools, enrolled us in institutions where we were compelled to learn Christmas carols, purchase hymn books, and pray in the name of Jesus. The environment was glamorous and enticing. For some, the pull proved too strong; despite efforts at home, they never regained their spiritual balance. We must be clear and fair: Christian evangelists cannot be blamed for doing what their faith requires. When a Muslim parent entrusts a child to a Christian-run school, it is only natural that the child will receive both education and Christian formation. This is a form of subtle indoctrination inherent in any faith-based institution. The logical response, therefore, is straightforward: **if our children must be formed in any religious worldview, let it be in our own faith.** The solution lies not in complaint, but in proactive investment. We must: - Build and sustain high-quality Islamic schools that combine academic excellence with sound tarbiyah (moral and spiritual formation); - Employ and properly remunerate the best teachers and administrators; - Equip our institutions with modern facilities and resources; - Develop curricula that are both Islamically grounded and globally competitive. Those who willingly place their wards in Christian missionary schools have, by that choice, limited their right to demand Islamic religious accommodations from those institutions. The schools, in turn, are acting consistently with their mission. **Nevertheless**, government-owned public institutions belong to all citizens. No religion should be marginalised or denied dignity within them. Any attempt to impose religious bias, whether through curriculum, ceremonies, or daily practices, upon students or parents in public schools constitutes a clear infringement on the fundamental constitutional right to freedom of religion. Let this be a renewed call to action for Muslim leaders, scholars, parents, and communities across Nigeria. The time for lamentation is over. The time for strategic, faith-driven investment in education has come. By the grace of Allah, through excellence in both ‘ilm (knowledge) and taqwā (God-consciousness), we can reclaim our rightful place and secure the future of our children as proud, knowledgeable, and unapologetic Muslims. May Allah guide our efforts, strengthen our resolve, and make our educational institutions beacons of light and sources of mercy for the Ummah and the nation at large. Āmīn.

Working with the recent GDP figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics, we can see that the economy is expanding modestly, but growth remains too concentrated in sectors that reward capital, scale, and pricing power more than labour. Therefore, it may be difficult for us to see concrete job creation in the way most people expect. Of the 3.9% real GDP growth, two-thirds came from Services, with telecoms and financial services performing relatively better than the rest. The parts of Services growing fastest are often high-value, asset-light, tech-enabled, and pricing-power-heavy sectors. Telecoms and financial services can grow revenue and profit without needing to hire millions of people. Most players in the Services sector are not necessarily mass job-creation machines. The sectors that typically absorb labour at scale are: ✑ Agriculture ✑ Manufacturing ✑ Construction ✑ Trade ✑ Logistics We know why these sectors are constrained. The broader economy can grow while poverty remains stubbornly persistent. The nominal GDP table reveals something interesting about the Services sector. Companies in that sector typically have stronger pricing power. They can reprice more quickly. Banks can reprice loans. Telecoms can monetise data consumption, real estate can reset rents, and traders can, at least partly, pass costs through. Manufacturers, on the other hand, face a harder context. They deal with imported input, energy costs, weak consumer wallets, logistics costs, and still struggle to pass the full cost to customers without destroying volume. Nigeria cannot sustainably reduce poverty if manufacturing is growing only 1% to 3% in real terms. That is too weak for a country with Nigeria’s population growth and unemployment problems. Real GDP growth is about volume growth. No rational entrepreneur risks capital on 1%-3% volume growth.
