@paulhardware Turns out Threadripper can only support 6-7 PCIe devices despite a huge number of PCIe lanes available. I am in touch with AMD, trying to get some kind of response from ASUS for over week now. Can you reach out I would appreciate your feedback

@IanCutress @cavemanjim Quality boards tend to move onboard devices address allocation out of the buffer used by PCIe devices, allowing for more to be connected. I was able to disable network and sound controller and post with 9 GPUs, so seems like this is the issue.

@IanCutress @cavemanjim I got some new info, short version there is - there is address space in MOBO that gets the address of all devices, integrated devices can consume a large portion of it, whatever is left is what can be used for PCIE for X399 that is enough for 7devices

@IanCutress @cavemanjim I see X399 as a special platform for special use cases with high demands, it should give more capabilities than an ordinary board. I understand this is very special case but I am more interested in how AMD and ASUS will handle this. I will give an update later

@ghost_motley @cavemanjim @IanCutress Techpowerup data - 32 lanes are wired out as PEG (PCI-Express Graphics) lanes, or four cards at x8 bandwidth, each. Remaining 28 can either be used to wire out a third set of PEGor up to three M.2 slots with x4 bandwidth, leaving the remaining lanes for other onboard controllers

@IanCutress @cavemanjim This setting does not exist on X399, at least not yet and this was one of the things I was looking for. I am waiting on comment from board manufacturer about this feature.

@cavemanjim @IanCutress I aksed all 3 for support(MSI, Gigabyte, Asus), and was not impressed, they keep escalating. I think I am on level escalation 9 level by now with two of them. Maybe on level 12 I will get someone who know whats up. I have ticket open with AMD as well

@cavemanjim @IanCutress Yeap put in 4 GTX 690 and it will not post, but I tried other combinations. 980 ti , 1080ti among others. When you are at 6 GPUs it begins to get unstable and sometimes see errors in OS pcie related. 7th GPU may or may not post and adding after that, it is pretty much dead.

@IanCutress @cavemanjim Bandwith does not really come in to play in my aplication, I am processing files that are at best 500kb, main issue I have with large number of GPUs is compute power needed to run 12 dcokers for each GPU that tracks and feeds the data. TR 1950X seemed like great solution

@IanCutress @cavemanjim From my research TR platform dedicates 32 lanes to PCIe, in my use case I need 1x for each GPU, but it looks like things are not straightforward. I posted everywhere no one has any solid response as to how this works and if this can be overcome.

@IanCutress @cavemanjim I want at least 14 GPUs connected(ignoting all dueal stuff) if possible I would go more, I just do not know how far CPU will take me with my use case. Currently I can not go past 7 and I am tryuing to understand if this is platfrom design limit of bios feature support.

@cavemanjim @IanCutress GPUs are GTX 690 those are dual, it wil see 8 GPUs, I guess that is where confusion is. Single GPU Cards will go up to 7 and then board will not post. I I tried all manufacturers, MSI, Gigabyte, Asus all of them bax out at 7, major issue, makes this CPU power usless.

@IanCutress @cavemanjim I want 10-14 for docker based AI inference processing, that's why TR 1950X but it does not boot with 4, some are dual GPUs cards. You can say it does 6 but I can run 12 without issues on 5-year-old ASUS -intel i5 board, it just lacks ram and CPU power. Hard limit X399 is only 6?
