@ed800m It was explained to me at Dartmouth in 1979 when I asked the question that the band wore green berets in recognition of them being as good at their job as commandos are at theirs. It also made them look more steely on security duties.

@clark_aviation Both my air cadet officers in the 70s were bomber crew. 7 years later it is remarkable to think that a few merchant navy crew in the Falklands had seen service in the Second World War. When I started my airline career in 1984 I flew with a couple of wartime pilots.
