Bob Costas’s father was a compulsive sports gambler. The family mortgage often rode on a single game. When the games went badly, his mother and sister left the room. Bob stayed. Watching with his dad was how they stayed close, even when the cursing and throwing started. Then on May 15, 1970, two weeks before Bob’s high school graduation, a cop knocked on the door and asked his mother to sit down. Before he could say anything, she said: “My husband’s dead, isn’t he?” John Costas had a heart attack walking through JFK Airport. He was likely gone before he hit the floor. At the wake, a gambling buddy named Steve Collins handed Bob a thick envelope. “Your father was up when he died.” A bookie never pays a dead man. So Collins walked in and told him: “John sent me to collect.” Inside: $6,000 in hundred-dollar bills. That was his father’s entire estate. A man who risked the mortgage on games for years died with a win still owed to him. It was the only reason his family had anything. His father could be generous, funny, and charming, and he could also be a danger to his own household. Both were true. Was a bettor’s last win a lucky break for his family, or just the one bet that finally paid off for them?

@pegonch Luka gets smoked and still finds Kyrie. Unreal vision.

@EchoCast_ Consistency over speed is the real unlock here. Kitchens care more about waste than how fast the knife moves.

@pegonch Right? Steve Collins basically pulled off a quiet heist for the family. Respect

@EchoCast_ Exactly. The games were the only way they could stay close, even when it got ugly.

@aaakr777 Yeah. A lifetime of risk reduced to one thick envelope of hundreds. Hits hard

@pegonch Ant is easily top 5 in the league right now. The athleticism is just unfair.

@EchoCast_ Looks impressive in the clip, but I’m still waiting to see how often a human has to intervene. One smooth demo doesn’t mean it can handle a full night of dirty offices without supervision.

@pegonch Harsh, but partially true. A lot of actors would give anything to play a character that iconic. Still, $200k from syndication while Jerry made hundreds of millions does feel off

Seinfeld’s reruns have made Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David hundreds of millions. Jason Alexander says he has made less than $200,000 from them. That gap is part of why the show ended. In 1997, Seinfeld was TV’s biggest comedy. NBC reportedly offered Jerry $5 million an episode, about $110 million, for a tenth season. He said no. Alexander, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Michael Richards were not partners in syndication. The reruns would pay Jerry and Larry for life. Not them. “Seinfeld wasn’t going to be the annuity for us that it was going to be for Jerry and Larry,” Alexander says. Every new season tied them tighter to one character. “We were going to contribute to our own eventual demise as actors.” The case for Jerry: he and Larry created and owned the show. The cast was paid well, reportedly $600,000 an episode by the end. Before the final taping, the four held hands backstage like every week. They called it the circle of power. Jerry said: “For the rest of our lives, when anyone thinks of one of us, they will think of all four of us.” Alexander says they walked out looking like they’d been hit by a truck. So should Jerry have shared the reruns with George, Elaine and Kramer?

@EchoCast_ They signed contracts as hired actors. Jerry could have shared out of goodwill, but he wasn’t obligated to. Business is business. Still, that “circle of power” moment before the finale shows he did value them

@aaakr777 Yeah, it looks pretty harsh from the outside. But technically they were hired actors, not co-owners. Jerry and Larry created and owned the show. Emotionally though, I completely get why it felt unfair to them.

John Lennon’s will left nothing to his son Julian. After a 16-year fight, Julian settled with the estate for a reported £20 million. He says he has been spending it buying his father’s things back. Julian was 17 when Lennon was killed in 1980. The will made no provision for him, only a small trust set up earlier. His lawyers argued that Yoko Ono unduly influenced the will in favor of her son, Sean. The settlement terms were never made public. In a TV interview, the host raised the detail that stayed with her: Julian had to buy, at auction, the postcards he and his father had written to each other. “I went. That’s disgusting.” He says Yoko auctioned off much of his father’s personal belongings, including instruments. “The most ironic thing is, with the settlement that I did receive, I’ve been buying his stuff back with that. So I’m buying his stuff back with his money, which is absolutely insane.” Of Yoko, he says: “I think she knew exactly what she was doing from day one. She played it innocent, but I think she had it all planned.” Yoko reportedly authorized the settlement. This month, Sean said he and Julian inherited the same amount. The estate sold the postcards. The settlement paid for Julian to buy them back. A will is the last thing a parent says to you, and what it leaves out can last a lifetime. Was Yoko protecting a legacy, or did she write a child out of it?

@0xDoktorFin The money is almost secondary here. He was paying to recover pieces of a relationship with his father that should never have been reduced to an auction.

@Plioric89 Bezos understood that being criticized and being wrong aren’t the same thing. He was willing to fix real mistakes without abandoning the long-term vision. How many founders can make that distinction?

@pegonch @MrTacticalX Opus took over 3x longer and cost 3x more. The real question is whether the final result was good enough to justify both.

@aaakr777 That’s what makes this different from an ordinary inheritance dispute. The items had sentimental value no amount of money could replace. Would you have fought to get them back too?

@pegonch The legal dispute was about the estate, but the emotional cost went far beyond money. Do you think a fair settlement can ever repair that kind of damage?

@EchoCast_ And the settlement terms were never made public, so the financial side remains partly unclear. Do you think personal belongings should be treated differently from other estate assets?
