We were thrilled to win four awards at this year’s British Cheese Awards! 🧀 Our Extra Mature Cheddar, Mature Cheddar and Oak Smoked Goat’s Milk Cheese all won Silver Awards and our Double Devonshire Clothbound Cheese won a Bronze Award 🧀
🧀 We have some news!! 🧀 As of tomorrow our Cheese Shop in Newton St Cyres just outside Exeter will be open from 9am-1pm on Saturdays. To launch our Saturday openings in style, the fantastic Stuart Dowle will be doing tastings of our cheese from 9am - 1pm.
#MeetTheMakersInMarch Say hello to @QuickesCheese! 👋 This award-winning producer has tended the same land in the heart of Devon's picturesque countryside since 1540. Continuing this proud legacy, Quicke's crafts its renowned clothbound cheddar meticulously, using grass-fed milk from the farm, time-honoured recipes, and heritage techniques passed down through generations. 🐄 To mature the cheeses, they are carefully placed in traditional wooden racks within the "nursery store." After about three months, they move to Quicke's "Cathedral of Cheese," where they continue to age. The clothbound truckles are turned every ten days, ensuring an even texture as they mature for up to two years. 🕰️ Within the cool, dim confines of this cheese sanctuary, each rind develops a unique texture and colour, ranging from camo-green to vibrant orange. The clothbound cheese fosters a distinctive mould garden, infusing a rich horseradish flavour beneath the rind—a hallmark of Quicke's cheese. It is during this maturation process that a diverse array of flavours emerges, from the creamy freshness of Quicke's Buttery Clothbound Cheddar to the satisfying complexity of Quicke's Vintage Clothbound Cheddar. 🧀 Today, in a close partnership, Somerdale and Quicke's collaborate to bring some of the finest traditional clothbound cheddars to customers worldwide. 🐄 If this hasn’t convinced you to try some of Quicke’s cheddar, then we don’t know what will!

Last week the 64th Ceremony of the Christmas Cheeses was held by the Chelsea Pensioners at the Royal Chelsea Hospital. This tradition dates back to the opening of the Royal Hospital in 1692 when a local cheesemonger donated cheese to the “Red Breasts of Chelsea” for Christmas.
