Sian Massey-Ellis, who has been one of English football's best assistant refs, announces her retirement from officiating to take up a role with The FA as Senior Manager - Women Referees. “From standing beneath the Premier League sign before my very first match to officiating at FIFA World Cups, UEFA European Championships, Champions League finals and across domestic fixtures and competitions in England, football has taken me on a journey beyond anything I could ever have imagined," Massey-Ellis says via @prorefofficial. “Throughout my career, football has challenged me, tested my resilience and pushed me to become a better professional and person. If my journey has helped change perceptions, open doors or inspire even one young person to believe they belong in the game, then I will consider that one of my greatest achievements. To the young girl who simply loved refereeing and dreamed of reaching the very top - we did it. Thank you, football."

Mike Dean on Anthony Taylor’s retirement from refereeing after being asked by a reporter. 🎙️ Reporter: “Mike, Anthony Taylor has announced his retirement. Looking back on his career, how will football remember him?” Mike Dean: “Football fans have short memories. They remember one decision and forget the thousands of others. Anthony Taylor has spent more than two decades putting himself in the firing line every single weekend while millions of people sitting on sofas think they could do the job better.” “Whether you loved him or hated him, every club he officiated will remember Anthony Taylor. Some fans still celebrate decisions he made. Others are still furious about them years later. That’s what happens when you’re trusted with the biggest matches in world football.” “Managers screamed in his face. Players surrounded him every weekend trying to influence him. Supporters abused him for ninety minutes and then questioned his integrity the moment they lost. Yet every single week he walked back onto that pitch and accepted the pressure all over again. Most of the people criticizing him wouldn’t last five minutes carrying that responsibility.” “People act as if referees wake up wanting to decide football matches. That’s nonsense. Anthony Taylor never stepped onto a pitch trying to become the story. He stepped onto it to do one of the hardest jobs in football while knowing one split-second decision could make millions of people turn against him.” “When he retires, football doesn’t just lose a referee it loses someone who carried the weight of the game on his shoulders for more than twenty years. You don’t survive at the highest level for that long if you’re weak. You survive because you have the mentality to keep going when the entire football world is shouting at you.” “Yes, there were controversial decisions. Show me a referee who never made one. They don’t exist. That’s football. The difference is that Anthony Taylor had the courage to keep making those decisions under unbelievable pressure while everyone else judged them with the benefit of slow-motion replays.” “Now everyone suddenly wants to show respect because he’s retiring. Where was that respect when he was being abused every single weekend? It’s easy to applaud someone when they’re walking away.
