But I don't think this would be unusual even in the most competitive for-profit industries. I imagine a top restaurant, store brand, etc. would probably seek to open in areas of broad unmet demand before going into direct competition with other popular stores, all else being equal. There aren't many cities (with some exceptions!) where there's so little remaining unmet demand that schools need to go head-to-head to expand.

@marcportermagee Ah, interesting, but in my experience - granted, not in typical districts, but ones with very high charter market share - is that this happens at first, either by design or organically, and then at some point the charters start overlapping and competing for kids, talent, etc.

@ChrisMurphyCT We should do both. Let the rich kids have their private clubs, but fund schools and cities where those are out of reach for most families to expand access to recreational and elite soccer programs, especially in K-8 where those programs are basically nonexistent now.

@DrTraceyK @marcportermagee @JoanneLeeJacobs @NickKristof Especially since youth sports are so expensive now, I’m sure there’s a big correlation between sports and wealth, and we know there’s one between academic achievement and wealth, so this would make sense.

Results released today of a new study following the long term impact of KIPP charter schools are incredible and highly policy relevant. One of my critiques of program evaluations is they tend to judge short term measures (like test scores) when what matters is long term outcomes (higher ed completion and income). So we @Arnold_Ventures sanctioned the 1st study to follow kids who attended a KIPP charter school for 10 years. While earlier research showed kids who attended a KIPP middle school had significant improvements in test scores, this study shows that kids who subsequently did not attend a KIPP high school only had minimal improvement in college attendance and completion. But for kids who attended both a KIPP middle and high school, the impact was enormous: nearly doubling the % of kids who graduated with a 4-year degree. As the researchers wrote: "An effect of this size, extrapolated nationwide, would be large enough to nearly close the degree-completion gap (for Black and Hispanic students)."
