@JohnBollman11 @SportNewsNerd .. but we don’t have much time to wait for a potential “peak” in his value. He has pretty great potential but I definitely don’t feel like we’re making a poor sacrifice for Varsho. I really believe he’s a great piece for the Jays, as much as it stings to lose Moreno.

@JohnBollman11 @SportNewsNerd If we were a few years out from true contending, I would not like this move - but a catcher had to be dealt and I trust the FO took their best option. No room for Moreno to break into the roster, someone had to go. The diminishing power last yr was worrisome, can def unlock it..

@JohnBollman11 @SportNewsNerd And for Moreno - not exactly sure what more they could have gotten. Love him as a player but Jays are no longer in the right place to wait and hold onto prospects - win now, they have no use for more catchers given they had the best output last yr from the position

@JohnBollman11 @SportNewsNerd The big source of value here is 4 years of control on Varsho vs only 1 more on Gurriel, last szn DV had higher power #’s where LGJ had high avg, resulted in similar OPS+ (~10% above lg avg i believe). Gurriel doesn’t hold much value in this deal, it’s 95% Moreno in my mind

@JohnBollman11 @SportNewsNerd Much better than “slightly above average”. Higher fWAR than any Jays position player last yr, incredible defender. So much room to grow with his bat. Clearly hasn’t gotten the recognition he deserves given he played in Arizona but I think you’re criminally underrating him.
