Not a quaint stadium, but if you want the most fan intensive, loudest atmosphere in any sport find a way to go to the Tennessee v Alabama game, known as the ‘Third Saturday in October’. This year it is played at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville, TN. An iconic stadium built next to the Tennessee River in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains. Traditions such as Pride of the Southland Band, Volunteer Navy, running through the T, and great tailgating with the fans. The fall foliage adds to the beauty of East Tennessee in October. You will be welcomed by all.

A recent conversation at Rotary made me stop and think. Over the past few years, we've noticed that many of our scholarship recipients gradually lose touch. There are probably many reasons, but one stood out to me: many of the mentors who once walked alongside these students are no longer in the program. That hit home. So Brenda and I have decided to invest in two incoming college freshmen this year—our godchild and a young man our Life Group at church has adopted. Our Life Group has already committed to writing notes of encouragement, sending snack packages, and occasionally surprising them with gift cards. Those things matter. Every college student needs to know someone is cheering for them. But mentoring has to go deeper than encouragement. It means modeling consistency. Teaching them to show up for every class. Turn assignments in on time. Manage a calendar. Set goals. Learn to solve problems instead of waiting for someone else to rescue them. As I've been thinking about this responsibility, I wrote down five long-term goals for the kind of mentor I want to be. I want to help a student become: • Confident • Independent • Purposeful • Resilient • Well connected I've mentored project teams, young professionals, and leaders throughout my career. But mentoring a college freshman is new territory for me. So I'd like to learn from those who have already traveled this road. If you've mentored a college student—or if someone invested in you when you were that age—what advice would you give? What made the biggest difference? What do you wish someone had taught you during your first year of college? I hope this starts a conversation. Our young adults don't just need scholarships. They need people willing to walk beside them.

@KevG163 I miss those games. I grew up watching them. Nostalgia makes me think back to Bob Hope introducing the Gillette All-America Team on his Christmas program. Listening to AM radio on Saturdays waiting for the top and bottom of the hour updates for college football scores.

Congratulations, you survived another work week! For many, Friday marks the end of the work week. For me, it marks another opportunity to be thankful for the time, talents, and responsibilities God has entrusted to us. Work is not confined to Monday through Friday. Opportunities to serve, improve, build, encourage, and lead exist seven days a week. Whether it's a major project, helping a teammate, mowing the lawn, serving at church, or simply being present for family, every task has value when approached with the right attitude. No task is beneath me. Leadership is not about avoiding the work; it is about setting the example. A servant leader looks for opportunities to make the world around them a little better, their workplace a little stronger, and their household a little more joyful and peaceful. The calendar may say Friday, but purpose does not take weekends off. Make the most of the time you've been given. Someone, somewhere, will be better because you showed up and did the work.
