@ianmSC It's the left wing attempting their own version of "take Trump seriously but not literally" because they are jealous he gets away with it, except it doesn't translate because Trump is famously transactional and nonideological while these folks are deeply, deeply ideological.

Is there a left-wing version of @DouthatNYT ? I would genuinely love to read someone who patiently and uncondescendingly explains progressive ideas to a conservative audience the way Douthat does in reverse for his NY Times readers. But I can't think of anyone who even bothers.

@mattyglesias Joking aside it's b/c the Euro model sees capitalism as a tool for specific ends, like running beach concessions, within a socialist framework; while in the US gov't is a tool used to achieve specific ends, such as running public beaches, inside a generally capitalist framework.

@jeffreytucker I refused on principle to ever "show my papers" during that wretched period but the one time I had no choice, to visit a corporate office, I was amazed at how perfunctorily the receptionist glanced at it. I could have shown her anything. No one believed it actually mattered.

Missed opportunity for Gorsuch to join Kavanaugh's concurrence in the Citizenship case. Would have made a more decisive 7-2 headline AND would have created a more cohesive "plurality" alternative view for a future court and today's commentators.

Essentially Kavanaugh says Congress ought to have some leeway in defining "under the jurisdiction thereof", while Gorsuch's exposition on domicile provides reasonable boundaries for applying that leeway. It fits together.

@StatisticUrban I am happy for the outcome. But both the concurrence, and the Gorsuch dissent (which really could have also been a concurrence in part) are quite reasonable and would have left 90% of the status quo in tact anyway, under different reasoning. No need to manufacture divisions.

I kinda think everyone is wrong about the insurgent turn in American politics (MAGA/DSA) stemming from resentment and hardship and so on. In fact it's a great indulgence, available only to comfortable citizens of a rich and stable country, to prioritize ideological fulfillment over any kind of practical considerations, knowing full well that nothing concretely bad will actually happen to you. In a poor country if you vote for socialism you get socialism and then you starve to death.

@GovernorVA I was glad to see the Lobster Map defeated on procedural grounds but I was really hoping for a more hilarious (and plausible) outcome where they might have ruled the referendum was legit and now you had to draw new "fair" districts exactly as promised.
