The Greek word Paul uses for what he does to his body is hypōpiázō. It literally means to give a black eye to. He figuratively “whoops” it. I heard that word in church this morning. Our pastor was preaching 1 Corinthians 9, and that word gave a lot more intensity and clarity to the passage. Because what typically happens to the believer is that we can be highly spiritual and active, and then the flesh strikes and has its moment, and we let it have its moment. Too often, we question God for the flesh doing what flesh does, instead of just fighting and resisting it. Paul holds no such hearing. He gives it a black eye. The imagery the entire chapter evokes is that of athletes competing for a prize. Athletes fight their flesh too. They don’t oscillate between their disciplined self in the gym and a home body eating ice cream and cookies the way we oscillate between spirit and flesh. The athlete craving sweets at home does not let his flesh have a moment. He seizes his appetite by the throat. The part of the scripture that pressed on me as I took the metro home was verse 25b: “Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.” They ran for a crown that won’t last. In the Isthmian races near Corinth, that crown was made of leaves and celery. It faded within weeks. But Paul’s idea of decay runs so much deeper than leaves wilting. For the athletes in Corinth, the real crown was not the physical one made of leaves and celery. It was the glory, the validation, the collective gaze of the stadium and the adoration of an entire community. Even if that crown were made of gold, more lasting than leaves but perishable all the same, the glory it represents would still fade. It is the feeling of a country winning the World Cup. Like the French players in 2018, hundreds of thousands packing the Champs-Élysées in the center of Paris, rejoicing and jubilating. Everyone loves you, the respect is absolute, and the intoxication is peak. But that human glory decays in two ways. First, the world moves on. The crowds disperse, a new tournament arrives, and memories fade. But second, and even worse, our own minds get used to the high. The thousandth time holding the trophy can never replicate the lightning-bolt shock of the first time. The glory rots from the inside out because you just can’t feel it the same way anymore. The eternal crown Paul promises defeats both problems at once. God’s delight and validation of us will be so intensely alive, permanently. He never transfers His gaze to a newer subject. No subsequent competition will ever displace you in His eyes. And we will never get bored or used to it. The joy of being with an infinite God means it will always keep growing, yet it will always retain the raw, shocking quality of the very first time. It is simultaneously the first time, and more than the first time. You cannot manufacture a second first time on earth. God does not have that problem.

Eat a mouthful of grass and you get nothing. It goes in green and comes out green. Eat straw and you get nothing. Your gut cannot touch cellulose. Eat acorns and you get tannins, and a very bad afternoon. Eat bracken and you get a carcinogen. The grass she eats grew on rain and sunlight, for free, on a hillside nobody can plough. She is the only creature on earth that can take a field of inedible fibre and hand you back the most nutrient-dense food there is. The cow is not competing with you for food. She eats the ninety percent you cannot. Best plant-based diet ever invented. It just has a cow in the middle doing the hard part.

When I was Muslim, my entire world was this feeling: I was doing everything right, but still not enough.  I was praying on time. Fasting. Obeying. Trying your hardest to please God. But still feeling far from Him? That’s the orphan spirit. And I didn’t realize I carried it until I left Islam. Because here’s the truth nobody ever told me: Islam doesn’t raise sons. It trains servants. You obey to survive. You perform to prove your worth. And you never actually know if it’s enough. So you live anxious. Always striving. Always exhausted. Always trying to earn security that never fully comes. I lived like that for 20 years. Then I met Christ. And I didn’t meet a distant judge. I met a Father. A God who didn’t tell me to climb my way to Him, but came down to rescue me Himself. That changes everything. Because now my relationship with God is not built on fear of failing over and over again. It’s built on adoption. And trust me, I still fail. I still mess up constantly. But a son runs to his Father differently than a servant runs to a master. That’s the difference. So if your relationship with God feels cold, distant, exhausting, and transactional, maybe the issue isn’t that you’re broken. Maybe you’ve just never known what it feels like to be fully loved by a Father. Jesus didn’t just save me. He adopted me.

Why did it take one young man with a camera to uncover what government inspectors failed to discover for decades? It’s simple. Washington pays 90% of Medicaid expansion costs. To the states, it's basically free money, so they have zero incentive to check who's actually eligible for these benefits. Make it a 50-50 split between the federal government and the states, and you'll see states taking an interest in fraud real fast.
