WHY THE @PopMatters REVIEW ON CONFESSIONS II WAS REALLY MEANT FOR LADY GAGA @metacritic Jeffrey Davies, an amateur musical critic (who primarily writes about his psychological struggles), but avid Lady Gaga fan, just published a 5/10 takedown of Madonna’s Confessions II in @PopMatters . Read it closely. Every line lands harder on LADY GAGA than it does on the woman it’s actually about. “The best we can hope for from our pop matriarchs is nostalgia.” Madonna gets dinged for one legacy sequel. Gaga has built entire eras recycling The Fame and Born This Way imagery over and over. The difference is Madonna actually has an original disco landmark worth revisiting. Gaga is nostalgic for herself before she ever finished becoming anything else. “It has a lot to say by saying nothing.” Peel back the manifesto language, the “movement, not a place” posturing, and ask the same question of Gaga’s own mythology building: the Little Monsters sermons, the grand artist statement interviews. Underneath the philosophy major cosplay, the actual lyric writing hasn’t moved past 2011. “She can make this music in her sleep.” This is Gaga’s whole ceiling, not Madonna’s. Hooks engineered to spec, nothing left that surprises anyone. Mechanical output mistaken for vision. The no win trap, except it’s a real trap for her. Madonna got mocked for trying too hard, then mocked for coasting. Davies frames that as unfair. Gaga doesn’t even get the sympathy. Jazz standards read as prestige grabbing insecurity. Club pop returns read as relevance panic. She built the “art pop chameleon” brand herself, so critics feel entitled to call the bluff every time. The real punchline. Davies’s closing line, that legacy women in pop only get rewarded for nostalgia and never innovation, was written about a 67 year old founder of the genre. It’s far more damning applied to a 40 year old who was marketed as the avant garde future of it. Madonna earned the right to be nostalgic. Gaga just ran out of new ideas early and called it art. Confessions II made the double standard visible. It just happened to expose the wrong artist’s name in the headline.
