The results raise an important question:
If services are not improving outcomes for the people who rely on them most, how should health systems adapt to better support recovery and wellbeing?

These findings were possible because Alberta collects individual-level health identifiers at consumption sites, allowing researchers to examine how people interact with the health system before, during, and after major service changes.
Update: Our study published in Addiction examines outcomes after the closure of the Red Deer Overdose Prevention Site (OPS) in Alberta.
👉Our study has moved from "early access" and is now officially in print.
New CoRE co-authored study: Waitlists for opioid agonist therapy (OAT) in Alberta correctional facilities have been virtually eliminated.
⚡ Time to first OAT treatment: 11.6 days → less than 1 day

⬇️Alberta saw a 39% decrease in opioid-related deaths since the peak in 2023.
⬇️Nationally it was 17%.
❗ Alberta accounted for approximately 95% of Canada's reduction in opioid-related deaths.
Bottom Line: Alberta is driving Canada’s opioid reduction success though expanded access to treatment and recovery.
📊 When it comes to evaluating supervised consumption sites, Alberta has a unique advantage.
Alberta is the only province to routinely collect health identifiers for SCS clients, allowing researchers to measure real-world outcomes of site users.

Evidence doesn't change lives, but what we do with that evidence does.
CoRE doesn’t just study mental health and addiction. We evaluate the Alberta Recovery Model’s programs to see what works, what doesn't, and why, so that decision-makers can invest in the programs and services that improve outcomes for Albertans.

🧠 The longer psychosis goes untreated, the harder recovery can become.
Early intervention improves outcomes and can reduce long-term disability.
