The centerpiece of the feast was a large cauldron of mushroom soup. The Guosim cooks produced chestnut and blackberry flans, damson pies, damson tarts, and pear crumbles. There was rosehip an' mint tea and a great deal of burdock cordial.
You a-comin' in for summat to eat? There's berry an' barley bake, blackberry and pear tart, an' cold spiced fruit cordial.
Yes, chestnut and mushroom flan, that's jolly nice. I like autumn salad with plums, plum pudden, hot scones with apple jelly, lashin's o' the stuff! Er, damson an' honey pie, pear tart, plum an' almond cake with a wedge of cheese, anythin' like that.
There was white cheese and bread aplenty at the dinner table, with some tasty bulrush and shrimp soup, a selection of turnovers, a fine harvest salad, plus honey rhubarb crumble for dessert, with the option of pear'n'peach pudding.
Candied chestnut trifles, topped with meadowcream, jostled for position among carrot an' leek flans, shrimp'n'mushroom pasties, hotroot soup, and the favorite of moles, deeper'n'ever turnip'n'tater'n'beetroot pie.
Oh, I say, Friar Dubble's done us proud! Quince and elderberry pie, pear crumble, potato'n'mushroom turnovers, roasted hazelnut cheese, and redcurrant an' roseleaf cordial. Hmm, I would have enjoyed a cup of tea, though. Cordial always makes me dozy at lunchtime.
Early-spring veggible soup, rhubarb crumble, with fruit tart an' pennycress an' comfrey cordial to follow. How'll that suit ye?
Tea in the orchard was extremely pleasant. Abbot Durral provided them with some mixed fruit cake, thin cucumber sandwiches, and hot dandelion an' mint tea.
The young hedgehog helped herself to a plate of spring salad with carrots, radishes, celery, watercress, leeks, and scallions and a piece of barley bread spread with soft white cheese.
Leek and celery soup provided by the otters; a large flagon of elderflower an' bilberry cordial; Friar Bellows's famous spiced apple and damson pie; oat bannocks; candied fruit turnovers; and cask of bilberry an' apple cordial brewed by the hedgehogs.
In rapid order, a full damson cream pie, a plate of dried fruits, a big pitcher of mint an' buttercup cordial, and an enormous carrot and onion pastie were devoured by the insatiable hare.
There was a thick mushroom stew, warm rye bread, a deep dish of turnip'n'carrot bake, and a fourseason plumcake with meadowcream. After the meal, they sipped rosebay willowherb tea.
Rye bread, hot and crusty from the ovens, with honey or strawberry preserves to spread on it. Pancakes, blackberry scones, and savory tarts were passed to and fro among the beakers of apple juice and hot rose-petal and plum-flower tea.
I could do a spot o' damage to a blackberry and apple tart right now. Wouldn't mind if it was hot or jolly well cold...
Whilst the shrews made the raft streamworthy, the rest sat on the bank lunching on mushroom pasties and bulrush and water-shrimp soup.
The Dibbuns were spooning in nut pudding and swigging elderberry cordial as if they had survived a seven-season famine.
What time is it? Just past noon, wot. I'd normally be sittin' down to me post-luncheon snack now. Arrowroot wafers, scones with strawberry preserves an' comb honey, with a nice pot o' herbal tea.
Course after course was brought to the table; chestnut and mushroom bake, with spring vegetable stew, hazelnut rolls, and a woodland plum and spice cake with pink icing.
Dishes went this way and that from paw to paw, woodland pudding, hot fruit pies, colorful trifles, tasty pasties, steaming soup, freshly baked bread with shiny golden crusts, old cheeses studded with chestnuts.
