Celebrating leaders who are using the 7-1-7 target to stop outbreaks faster 👏 The 7-1-7 target is a global tool that tracks real-world outbreak detection, notification and response times: 7 days to detect an outbreak. 1 day to notify public health authorities. 7 days to complete early response actions. When countries meet the 7-1-7 target, the world gets safer. And when they don’t, they get better—because 7-1-7 surfaces lessons that allow countries to get faster and more effective at outbreak response over time. Through the 7-1-7 Alliance, 93 countries are using the target to make the world safer from disease threats. We’re working with partners in Nigeria’s government to build a healthier food environment. We recently supported a workshop for officers in Nigeria’s Food and Drugs Services (FDS) Department of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the agency department responsible for safeguarding the safety, quality and efficacy of food, medicines, cosmetics and other consumer products. The workshop combined interactive technical sessions, practical exercises, case studies and leadership discussions to strengthen program implementation and effectiveness. Strengthening institutional systems and technical leadership within government is essential for sustaining long-term health progress. As a result of this workshop, Nigeria’s FDS Department can better coordinate with regulatory agencies and implement national policy reforms, including sodium reduction, front-of-pack labeling, and other policies related to healthier food and lead poisoning prevention.
🏏 While you watch your favorite sports, health systems watch for invisible threats. Sports games and other mass gatherings create ideal conditions for infectious diseases to spread rapidly. Preparedness is essential—early warning systems for disease detection and response can mean the difference between one case and hundreds. A new video reveals how @CARPHA1 used an early warning system at the 2024 Men’s T20 cricket World Cup to protect residents, visitors, and health systems from potential outbreaks. Watch the full video: youtu.be/uywyV-lO3Y0?si…
How do you prevent diseases from spreading during major sporting events? That’s the question @CARPHA1 had to answer when tens of thousands of fans from around the world traveled to the Caribbean for the 2024 Men’s T20 cricket World Cup. The agency developed an early warning system to track symptoms and cases of potential disease—providing the right information to the right people at the right time. Their preparation and swift response worked: During the tournament, the system captured 146 cases of potential disease, and there was no person-to-person spread of any disease. CARPHA’s success shows how health systems dealing with sports tournaments and other mass gatherings can keep spectators safe. Watch our new video, premiered last week at #GHS2026.
High blood pressure is one of the most common, neglected health issues in the world. South Korea has achieved rare success controlling blood pressure, and their progress is replicable in every country. Our President and CEO @DrTomFrieden spoke to @sneweyy from @Telegraph about South Korea’s accomplishments and how better global blood pressure control can strengthen economies and save lives. Read the article here: telegraph.co.uk/global-health/…
In a new partner highlight, Dr. Champika Wickramasinghe shares lessons from Sri Lanka’s work to control high blood pressure, or hypertension, a deadly condition that causes heart disease, stroke and kidney disease. In 2021, we partnered with the Sri Lanka Ministry of Health to prototype a HEARTS-based hypertension program at the primary health care level to improve hypertension management and care. Since then, Sri Lanka has scaled the program nationwide, enrolling 430,000 people and achieving a blood pressure control rate of 45%—a huge accomplishment. We spoke with Dr. Champika, who helps lead the Ministry’s chronic disease program, about her role in the HEARTS program, the importance of blood pressure control for all Sri Lankans, and her hopes for the future. Shining a light on successful investments in preparedness in @el_pais💡 Our Chief Program Officer Amanda McClelland spoke to @PatriciaRBlanco about our New Epidemics That Didn’t Happen report and critical elements of preparedness that enable health systems to identify and respond to outbreaks quickly. Five years after the @WHO launched the Global Diabetes Compact, the diabetes community gathered in Geneva to take stock of what it has achieved. On the sidelines of the 79th World Health Assembly, Helmsley joined WHO, @ResolveTSL, World Diabetes Foundation, and @WHOSEARO to reflect on the progress we’ve made: first-of-their-kind WHO guidelines for diabetes, integrated care strategies reaching primary health systems across regions, and greater involvement of people living with diabetes in shaping the decisions that affect their care. @DrTomFrieden, Sanne Frost Helt, @BoehmeCatharina, Bianca Hemmingsen, and James Reid reflected on what five years of global collaboration have made possible — and on the work ahead. Earlier this week at #GHS2026 in Kuala Lumpur, we partnered with @WHO to co-host a hands-on workshop on collaborative surveillance, the practice of using real-time information to respond to outbreaks quickly and effectively. Participants from 10 countries rolled up their sleeves and worked through a "backwards" approach to surveillance planning—starting from a priority public health decision and identifying the data, collaborations and capacity needed to support it. The exercise brought the concept of collaborative surveillance to life in a practical, tangible way. Two case studies showed what this looks like in practice: 🇿🇲 Professor Roma Chilengi from Zambia shared how collaborative surveillance has enabled its national public health institute to integrate data from across sectors and generate actionable intelligence in seconds rather than days. 🇲🇾 Dr. Jamilah Yusoff from Malaysia demonstrated how multisource surveillance has strengthened the country's ability to address a pressing national public health priority. Thank you to Marie-Christine Bartens and the WHO Hub for Pandemic and Epidemic Intelligence for co-hosting, and to all the participants who brought thoughtful engagement to the discussion. Collaborative surveillance is how we build health systems that are ready—before the next threat arrives.
The Global Diabetes Compact has gathered governments, civil society, the @WHO & people living with diabetes around a shared agenda. The next challenge: turning targets into care on the ground. @IntDiabetesFed @ResolveTSL @DrTomFrieden @IHME_UW @sanofi healthpolicy-watch.news/five-years-aft…
A successful workshop with @NCDCgov to strengthen One Health surveillance, an approach that prioritizes cross-sector collaboration and integrates the connections between humans and the environment. Last month, we partnered with NCDC to introduce federal stakeholders to SITAware, Nigeria's event management platform for tracking public health threats and documenting response actions. We focused on how participants can use SITAware to strengthen One Health surveillance and hosted sessions about the platform’s key features, use cases and outputs. Effective use of the SITAware platform will improve notification, coordination and response to outbreaks and other public health threats. Thank you to our partners and participants for a productive workshop centered on this critical tool for health security. Between 1990 and 2023, South Korea dramatically reduced deaths from stroke by increasing blood pressure control rates from 5% to 62%. Their success can be a blueprint for the world. In a new article for @TheLancet, @fmclellan spoke to @DrTomFrieden and Dr. Renu Garg about South Korea’s remarkable success controlling high blood pressure, or hypertension, a deadly disease that causes heart attacks, strokes, dementia, and kidney failure. The spread of Ebola in DRC has been generating headlines—but most outbreaks don’t make the news. The lifesaving work of proactive public health systems that stop local disease outbreaks from becoming global catastrophes often flies under the radar. Our latest Epidemics That Didn’t Happen report shares six stories that didn’t make headlines. It highlights health systems that worked behind the scenes to identify outbreaks early and quickly contain them. These stories shine a light on how targeted investments in preparedness and well-timed response actions can save lives, even when they don’t make global news. Read the report: etdh.resolvetosavelives.org/2026/

Food safety impacts every family in the world. Each year, unsafe food causes around 1.5 million deaths, a large share of which are caused by exposure to harmful chemicals, such as lead. There is no safe level of lead exposure; even low levels can cause irreversible damage, including increased risk of heart disease and developmental issues in children. That’s why we’re working with @WHO to develop the PREVENT technical package to provide guidance on the most effective ways to prevent lead poisoning from all sources, including food and the materials used to prepare food. Read the new data from WHO to see how lead exposure affects healthy food access in your country: worldhealthorg.shinyapps.io/ferg-dev/
🔎 Implementing emergency-ready healthcare in Nigeria and beyond Our team recently partnered with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), the World Bank, AFENET, state governments, and others to hold a national workshop focused on putting emergency-ready health care into practice in Nigeria. After years piloting our epidemic-ready primary health care program, Nigeria is the first country to use the recently published Emergency-Ready Primary Health Care (ERPHC) Framework to create a large-scale, country-specific implementation plan. The ERPHC Framework, developed by our team and WHO, outlines a practical approach to strengthen primary health care systems to prevent, detect, and respond to health threats while maintaining essential services. We applaud Nigeria for their leadership in paving a new model of emergency preparedness and encourage other governments, partners, and communities to adapt the ERPHC framework to their contexts to improve health security. Learn more about ERPHC here: resolvetosavelives.org/resources/emer…
