Rare-earth-free motors. In-house cathode material. Local lithium refining. These look like separate engineering decisions. I don’t think they are. Cybercab is being designed for a world where autonomy is no longer the bottleneck — scale is. Tesla cannot afford to have Cybercab production constrained by a critical material or a vulnerable supply chain. For Tesla, every vehicle that can’t be built means lost recurring revenue. For third-party fleet operators, it means a revenue-generating asset they can’t put on the road. That changes how you design the car from the beginning. Materials, components, manufacturing processes and supply chains all have to be considered through the same lens: what could stop us from scaling? Cybercab isn’t just being designed to be cheap to build. It’s being designed to be hard to stop building.

Coming back to this a few months later. What stands out to me isn’t the hundreds of times Tesla has grown since its IPO, but how early the first major rerating happened. Roughly $2B at its 2010 IPO. Nearly $20B by 2013. What exactly made the market willing to give Tesla that first 10x? Aren’t you curious?

In 2026, how many X can the market give Tesla this time? There’s an interesting chapter between Tesla’s IPO and today. Tesla was worth around $2B at its 2010 IPO. By 2013, it had already approached $20B — nearly 10x in just three years. And yet Tesla delivered only 22,477 Model S vehicles in 2013, generated about $2B in revenue, and was still losing money for the full year. So what exactly was the market valuing? That may be the more useful question for Tesla in 2026.

@wholemars It removes the friction of accessing AI, but adds the friction of carrying another device. For dedicated hardware to make sense, it needs something an app on your phone simply can’t do — and that capability needs to matter enough that people actually want to carry it.

30 months: Waymo went from 0 to 989 vehicles in Texas. 15 months: Tesla Robotaxi went from 0 to 489. But there’s a more important difference: Waymo came to Texas with years of experience from Phoenix. Tesla was building its first Robotaxi operation from scratch. That growth rate will erase the first-mover advantage.

@DaPengforTesla @wholemars Exactly. Cybercab may be the first Tesla that truly deserves to be called a robot on wheels. If the goal is full autonomy, it’s not just the driver that eventually has to disappear — charging, cleaning, and other routine operations need to become autonomous too.

The first Cybercab with Tesla’s in-house cathode material proves the path works. It doesn’t tell us the production ceiling. That’s what I’d watch next: How many Cybercabs can Tesla’s cathode production support? How much lithium can the Texas refinery actually supply? What do yield and cost look like for the rare-earth-free motor at scale? Those numbers will tell us how much of Cybercab’s production bottleneck Tesla has actually removed.

I think Cybercab is different. Tesla can’t afford to let a critical material shortage constrain production. Every Cybercab that can’t be built means lost revenue for Tesla or a third-party fleet operator. That’s why supply-chain resilience seems to be built into the vehicle from day one.

@robotaxi For Model 3 and Y, a supply constraint delays a sale. For Cybercab, it delays recurring revenue. That makes supply-chain independence far more important when the product itself is a revenue-generating asset.

I completely agree. Super agents have almost no room to exist in China’s current internet ecosystem. It’s not that the technology isn’t there. The tech giants simply won’t allow an outside agent to sit between them and their users. The Doubao phone is already a perfect real-world example of why.
