Claudia Jones was a revolutionary feminist, communist, internationalist, and radical thinker whose legacy continues to influence the fight for global African liberation. Jones championed African women and made no secret of her lifelong mantra: no peace can be obtained if any women, especially those who are oppressed and impoverished, are left out of the conversation. Jones spent the rest of her life fighting against capitalism, corruption, and theorizing the triple oppression faced by working class colonized women

1985 MOVE BOMBING FAMILIES DEMAND RETURN OF KINS' REMAINS Relatives of 1985 bombing victims who belonged to the US-based MOVE liberation group called again on 9 December for the return of their kins’ remains from the Penn Museum (formally known as the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology), in another case highlighting the structural dehumanisation of Africans in the United States. On 9 December, John Africa, Jr., told reporters gathered for a press conference that authorities returned some bodies to the family without heads or torsos. A University of Pennsylvania student named Jane Weiss reportedly included an X-ray of 12-year-old Delisha Africa's head in her 2019 senior thesis, ‘Who is Jane Doe?’ raising further concern about the treatment of the remains. @mikeafricajr (X) also stated that his great-uncle, John Africa, a key MOVE figure, was buried without his head because it was removed using a saw rather than authorities’ claim that he had been decapitated by the bombing, ensuing blaze or gunfire.  Despite the city of Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania promising in 2021 to return all remains, MOVE maintains the institutions deny accountability and closure to the family. At the news conference she helped organise for the family, city councilmember Jamie Gauthier (@councilmemberJG on X), who represents the district that includes the museum and the bombardment site, condemned the institution's ‘profound disrespect for Black life and Black death.’ MOVE was a Black liberation group focused on environmentalism and animal rights. On 13 May 1985, Philadelphia police bombed their home and fired more than 10,000 rounds of ammunition, k*lling five children and six adults as police prohibited firefighters from putting out the ensuing blaze. The attack destroyed more than 60 rowhomes and left 250 people homeless. AFRICAN STREAM VISITS THOMAS SANKARA PLAZA IN NIGER Last month, African Stream had the opportunity to visit the new Thomas Sankara Plaza in Niamey, Niger, that many Pan-Africanists worldwide have been raving about.  While we had covered the plaza’s inauguration on 15 October, the date of Sankara's assassination, we were able this time to see it first-hand and speak with Nigeriens and Burkinabé about what it means. This move is just one of many in honour of revolutionary Pan-Africanist and socialist figures within the Sahel. Niger’s government recently honoured Djibo Bakary (1922-98), the great Nigerien socialist and Pan-Africanist leader whom African Stream produced a video about, by changing the name of Charles de Gaulle Avenue (in honour of a French coloniser) to Djibo Bakary Avenue. However, the changes in Niger are more than just symbolic. With Niger expelling French and US military forces and ending French mining giant Orano's contract, Niger is forging a path toward sovereignty that we suspect would make assassinated Burkina Faso President Thomas Sankara (1949-87) proud.

EUROPEAN POWERS FIGHTING IT OUT IN DRC In this 1964 clip, we see Malcolm X pushing back on CBS News reporters. They asked the chairman of the Pan-Africanist Organization of Afro-American Unity to condemn what the Western media labelled as the 'massacre' of European nuns held hostage in October 1964 in the resource-rich Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Malcolm's reply serves as a stark reminder that the ongoing conflict that has killed more than 6 million since the mid-1990s began with Western powers vying for the Congo's mineral wealth since the late 1800s.

We salute and send our utmost solidarity not only with students organizing solidarity encampments, but with the people of Gaza and the Palestinian struggle. Walter Rodney knew very well that liberation rests in the hands of the masses, of the youth, and we uphold this truth.

Revolutionary Guyanese writer and activist Walter Rodney was born on this day in 1942. We remember the guerrilla intellectual, who left a lasting legacy on academia and the struggle for social justice. Rodney's intellectual journey began at university in Jamaica, where he rejected the path of a technocrat and instead focused his curiosity on Africa during its period of independence. He earned is PhD from London’s School of Oriental and African Studies aged 24. His research challenged established historical narratives on Europe’s role in the trans-Atlantic slave trade and exposed the detrimental effects of European colonialism on Africa's development. Rodney's determination to make a difference took him to Tanzania‘s Dar Es Salaam University, where, in the late ‘60s, he taught and left his mark on a generation of historians living under the leadership of Mwalimu Julius Nyerere. Returning to Jamaica, he embraced the struggles of the marginalised and connected with students and the working poor through his teachings and community engagement. His ability to bridge the gap between intellectuals and the masses was met with government surveillance and eventual expulsion from Jamaica. This sparked widespread riots and cemented his radical legacy. Throughout his life, Rodney remained dedicated to the cause of social justice, forging alliances with intellectuals, including Rastafarian leaders and Black-power activists. Notably, his impact extended to figures such as Ralph Gonsalves, who now serves as the prime minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. After his expulsion from Jamaica, Rodney returned to Tanzania, where he played a key role in the Dar Es Salaam school of intellectual inquiry. There, he completed his magnum opus, "How Europe Underdeveloped Africa," which continues to provoke passionate debates among historians and Pan-Africanists today. Tragically, his life was cut short when he was killed by a car bomb in 1980, leaving behind a legacy of courage, intellectual astuteness, and a commitment to social transformation. 30,000 showed up to send him off at his funeral, illustrating how dearly he was held by the people. Walter Rodney's story serves as a testament to the power of ideas, the pursuit of justice, and the impact one individual can have on society. His legacy remains alive, inspiring current and future generations to challenge oppressive systems and strive for a more equitable world.
