An aspect of trams and trains and trams and buses is how eminently suitable they are for second hand use and recycling. Expensive to build maybe but when worn out they can be restored and sent to smaller towns or regions with less money for infrastructure and used again for centuries. Here's a Japanese subway train reused in Buenos Aires, a 1948 London trolleybus used in Bilbao, Spain in the 1970s, a 1960s Copenhagen tram reused in Alexandria (maybe still running?), and second-hand German trains running in Poland from 2025 onwards.
You don't need the latest and the highest tech for your regional public transit. Sometimes the most fitting tech is what your local mechanics can repair in your local workshops.
No tengo problema.

Can someone please explain, in very simple language, how growing almonds in a Californian desert, draining the local aquifer until the ground subsides, spraying the entire crop with fungicides because almonds can't survive without them, killing off the commercial bee population in the process, then refrigerating the harvest and shipping it six thousand miles to Britain is environmentally friendly,
but buying a piece of beef from a farmer twelve miles down the road, whose cattle eat the grass that grows in the rain that falls on the hills that have been there since before anyone had opinions about this,
is a planetary emergency?

Every generation of doctors was confident.
Every generation was wrong about something they were certain of.
The question isn't whether to trust doctors.
The question is which part of the current list turns out to be the thalidomide.
The Argentine Pampas in 1833 is, to put it plainly, not a landscape that prepares you for the people who live in it.
It is enormous in a way that European landscapes are not: not the dramatic enormousness of mountains, but the quiet, flat, unrelenting enormousness of a continent-sized grassland that runs to the horizon in every direction and gives the sky more room than any sky you've ever seen. The grass is long. The wind moves it in slow waves.
There are no trees except the occasional ombú, which is not technically a tree but a herbaceous plant with a woody base that grows to tree size through pure stubbornness, and which the cattle avoid because it is mildly toxic, and which therefore stands alone in the grassland like someone who has been to a party and made a poor first impression.
The gauchos live in this landscape with the easy familiarity of people who have never needed to make peace with it because it never occurred to them that peace was required.
They eat beef. Almost exclusively beef. Asado: beef on metal skewers, driven into the ground at an angle around a bed of hardwood coals, cooking slowly for two, three, sometimes four hours while the gaucho sits nearby doing what the gaucho does, which is to say very little very effectively. The fat renders down the meat. The outside chars. The inside remains pink in the way that alarmed Victorian food safety advocates and continues to alarm them wherever they survive.
They eat it with a knife. They eat a lot of it. They drink mate from a gourd through a metal straw, passing it between them in a sequence that has a social grammar as legible to them as the grammar of the language they speak.
They eat no bread. They eat almost no vegetables. They eat no grain.
Charles Darwin, who spent time with gauchos in 1833 during the Beagle voyage and rode with them across this exact landscape, described them in his journals with the slightly stunned admiration of a Cambridge-educated naturalist encountering something his theoretical framework hadn't fully prepared him for.
He noted their endurance: days in the saddle, across terrain that killed European horses. Their skill. Their complete physical competence in conditions that would have destroyed a man raised on English bread and English assumptions about what food was supposed to look like.
He did not connect the diet to the capability. He was close. He was looking right at it.
The modern nutritionist, if we could transport one to the Pampas of 1833 and sit them next to Darwin, would be attempting to calculate the gaucho's fibre intake.
The gaucho would offer them mate and wait for them to finish.
Then he would get back on his horse.
