These three cybersecurity tools (SOAR, EDR, and XDR) work together in a complementary way, not competitively. Here's how they correlate: EDR as the Eyes: EDR acts as the initial detection layer, continuously monitoring individual devices for suspicious activity. It gathers data on processes, network connections, file changes, etc., and identifies potential threats based on pre-defined indicators. XDR as the Brain: XDR takes the information from EDR and expands on it. It acts as a central hub, collecting data not just from endpoints (via EDR) but also from firewalls, cloud applications, network devices, and other security tools. By analyzing this broader dataset, XDR can identify more complex threats and hidden connections between seemingly isolated events. SOAR as the Hands: SOAR takes the insights from EDR and XDR and translates them into action. It doesn't directly detect threats itself, but it automates the response process based on pre-defined playbooks. SOAR can trigger actions on EDR or other tools to isolate a threat, quarantine infected devices, or notify security teams.
