𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗔𝗗𝗔 𝗔𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: The controversy at the American Diabetes Association (ADA) Scientific Sessions just got bigger. For those who missed it: five highly respected diabetes researchers and physicians, now known as the "New Orleans Five," were escorted out of the ADA meeting after quietly distributing printed copies of a published editorial from Diabetes Care—the ADA's own flagship scientific journal. According to multiple accounts, there were no protests, speeches, placards, or disruptions. The group was simply handing out copies of an editorial criticizing the impact of recent federal cuts to biomedical research. One of those removed was Dr. Steven Kahn, Editor-in-Chief of Diabetes Care and lead author of the editorial. The incident sparked outrage throughout the meeting. Dozens of attendees staged a walkout carrying signs stating, "We Stand With Science." Thousands of physicians and researchers have since signed petitions demanding accountability. Now the fallout has reached the highest levels of the organization. ADA President-Elect Dr. Jennifer Green and Scientific Sessions Planning Committee Chair Dr. Mark Atkinson have reportedly resigned from their leadership positions. Additional resignations are also being reported. Dr. John Buse publicly defended the researchers, stating that they were behaving respectfully and peacefully. Meanwhile, Dr. David Nathan called the decision to eject the scientists "the single most destructive thing" he has seen in over 50 years of involvement with the ADA. The irony is extraordinary. The researchers initially hoped a few hundred people might read the editorial. After the ADA's actions, the article reportedly received tens of thousands of views and generated worldwide discussion. Science advances through evidence, debate, and open discussion, not by escorting scientists out of meetings for distributing a peer-reviewed article published in your own journal. The lesson is simple: when institutions punish scientific discourse, they often amplify it instead.Punchline: The ADA tried to stop a paper from being distributed. Science and medicine is in trouble. Today at the @AmDiabetesAssn conference in NOLA, scientists, including a former president of the ADA, were reportedly confronted by police while distributing an editorial expressing concerns about changes to biomedical research under the Trump administration. Some were reportedly threatened with arrest if they returned. That should concern all of us! You do not have to agree with every scientist or every opinion being expressed to recognize that intimidating researchers or suppressing scientific discourse is dangerous AF. Today is a big final day. Teshia Zuniga with @RuchiMathurMD and @GabrielaGSLeite show that rheumatoid arthritis is associated with #sibo. Is there a link to autoimmune diseases or does SIBO fuel the fire? More work is needed. @MASTprogram #microbiome

This one is for the skeptical academics. We measured breath hydrogen sulfide and methane then immediately scope the patient and measured the same in duodenum and symptoms and microbiome. Guess what...breath correlates with duodenum and symptoms so gases are from small bowel!

Also, @barlowgillian is presenting the effects of recent antibiotics on the #microbiome of the small intestine. Antibiotics do not cause SIBO. @MASTprogram @CedarsSinaiMed @GabrielaGSLeite
