We make it far too easy for senators in the minority to use the filibuster to kill bills supported by the majority. The whole idea behind the filibuster has, from the beginning, been to protect and prolong debate—not to cut off debate, forcing the Senate to abandon any bill that doesn’t immediately receive the support of at least 60 senators. Filibustering is supposed to require far more than opposing cloture. Especially for bills of exceptional national importance—like the SAVE America Act—senators should be required to hold the floor and speak. The minute filibustering senators stop doing that, the legislation can and should be passed at a simple-majority threshold. This is not a radical idea. This describes what the filibuster is, how it has historically operated, and how it should work today. Share this message if you agree that the Senate—and the country as a whole—would be well served by a return to this approach.

I really hope you have a chance to conduct some introspection @JohnCornyn These so called keyboard cowboys are your constituents that you represent. You work for them, not vice versa. And I know the best of them can read the Constitution. Those are the ONLY rules that matter in this debate. Any Senator can challenge any so-called rule or precedent but I suspect gutless Senators would rather take vacation. The maiden wisdom has lost her dowry; the tanner thinks he has a shot at her but the nobles still block the path.

Simple, two pronged: 1. Make Fathers Great Again 2. Jail time (commensurate with the violation). When you assault someone, put hands on someone, you go to jail. Doesn’t need to be long, just needs to (a) deter other youths, and (b) teach the offender where he’s headed if he keeps up the shenanigans.

It was my dearest hope that he would have studied under you at Hamilton. 1. I suspect many Senators are too far removed from reality to understand the implications of not passing SAVE. They sit and bask in their very posh lives. We all claim to hear and understand Democrats in their opposition to this act, that it creates friction for legal citizens to vote. Our good judgment tells us this is not so, but their voices are much louder in the media. Therefore everyday citizen democrats believe with all their heart that this act is intended to suppress their vote. The reality is that the act will not take away already legally registered voters from the polls as long as you are a citizen. It will stop illegal non-citizens from registering to vote in federal elections. Plain and simple. If you are a Costa Rican citizen, you cross the border in the dark of night illegally, you try to vote in a U.S. election, you want be able to. Everyone else will be able to vote. 2. Democrats (socialists) have great momentum going into the midterms this November. For example, in PA, the Democrat primaries were landslide numbers compared to Republican primary numbers. Analyzing these numbers based on previous elections and based on the current registration counts of the two parties, Pennsylvania will vote Democrat in every race this November. Many states are queued up the same as Pennsylvania. Therefore, while I don’t believe in historical inevitabilities, I don’t ignore data. Data suggests a complete landslide where the GOP will lose the house and senate. Are there potential variables that change this outcome? Certainly, but those are not likely. A Democrat sweep it will be. Socialists are taking over the Democrat party. This is not new, but it’s making news finally. A Democrat that says he’s not a socialist, is simply a socialist who advocates for the same progressive changes that the socialist/communists advocate for, but at a slower pace. Once any priority comes into focus, all democrats get behind it. Name me one socialist priority that your friendly neighborhood democrat does not agree with? The point of number 1 & 2 conflated together is that without 1, 2 is not temporary. This is the last chance to see to it that illegal aliens (that is non citizens) do not vote. Once the democrats sweep via number 2, there will never be an opportunity for number 1 (to pass voter ID). Most socialists openly admit that illegals should vote. Remember, all Democrats are socialists, either in name, or passively in policy. Thus, all democrats want anyone in the world to vote in our elections, because non-citizens tend to vote for entitlements. That’s all they really want. Free stuff. Your stuff.

.@JohnCornyn, your memo perfectly illustrates why the talking filibuster is necessary—not why we should avoid it like the plague or pretend it doesn’t exist. The procedural hurdles you list (including the two-speech rule, quorum, calendar drag, and opportunity costs) are real.

@NathanBenefield I suspect the ones that rated it “fair” are products of the schools and therefore were unable to read or understand the survey (and therefore randomly picked “fair”).

@mattvanswol @mikitaposts Right. This used to be patently clear to people, when we judged them by the content of their character. I yearn for the return of character, skills, and meritocracy. Virtue is worth studying because it can rub off to help someone become virtuous.
