AI is being used right now to decide who to hire, who to fire, who gets a loan, who stays in the hospital and who gets sent home. I am much more worried about those current, real-life uses of AI than potential downstream existential threats.

It is true that when a lot of people get older they start talking more about the weather. Almost compulsively. Neurotically. And for no particular reason. All of a sudden the weather fascinates them and terrifies simultaneously. The moment you start fixating on weather that is a sure-fire indicator that the end is nigh and soon you will be passing the baton. Just a friendly reminder.

I always find it funny when universities publish their desire to recruit and retain students and faculty, but never staff. What gives? Who recruits those students? Who helps them learn systems, advises them, mentors from day 1? Who aids them in making the trans HS to college?
