Very aware as I prepare to take my 6 week old for vaccinations that it is a privilege to do so. And that even if we have a tough night because of it, it is a privilege to do so. Too many in the world lack access to healthcare; too many have been robbed of the chance to grow up.

Wild-type polio has is targeted for global eradication (like we did with smallpox). The last case of wild-type polio in South Africa was reported in 1989. Unfortunately, countries like Afghanistan and Pakistan still have circulating wild-type polio virus.

The percentage of a population that needs to be vaccinated against an infectious disease to provide community immunity depends on how contagious the disease is, how effective the vaccine is, immunity gained from previous infections, population density, social mixing etc.

Immunity together. Community forever. When people in a community are vaccinated against an infectious disease e.g. measles, whooping cough, mumps, diphtheria and flu, it becomes much less likely to spread from person to person.
