So if you're financially well off enough to get an EV, you should. It helps create demand (and popular support) necessary to eventually drive down prices. /end
The same can happen with EV's. Folks looking at current EV's ($40/bulb) now saying it's too expensive, it'll never work, and it seems complicated (watt miles? J1772?). Not everyone can afford an EV, like those early day LED's, but soon: $1/bulb. We needed early adopters + law 4/5
In '07, the Energy Independence and Security Act set a new efficiency standard that essentially only CFL/LED's would achieve. Some folks complained LED's were inferior to incandescent (at the time, they were right), but the US effectively banned bad bulbs and market responded. 2/
I still vividly recall the first LED "bulb" I held at a GreenFest in DC in '04. The LED was hand crafted, cost $40. "This will never work," I thought. Too expensive, looked like a fire hazard, seemed complicated. Now you can get LED's at Costco for $1. What happend? 1/5
All of which is to say: the best way to protect US economy from oil price shocks is to accelerate efficient and electric vehicle adoption ASAP!
We are (for now?) well below record gas prices accounting for inflation. Plus US vehicle fleet much more efficient than 2008. We now have viable mass market EV alternatives & can you buy a mid-size SUV (eg RAV4 or Escape hybrid) that gets comparable gas mileage to a 2008 Prius!
To all the journalists reporting that gas prices are hitting a "record:" you have to adjust for inflation, for Pete's sake! In the 2008 runup, gas prices went well over $5 a gallon in 2022 dollars. Claiming we have just hit the highest-ever prices is misinformation.
I've now been asked to review yet again a paper in its 2nd revision (so this will be my 3rd time reading it) submitted to a well-known energy journal. On both previous occasions I (and the other reviewer) recommended "major revision". Can one say, three times and you're out?
Driving an EV is now about 5 times cheaper per mile than driving a gasoline car.
