On Tuesday, June 23, at approximately 11:30 a.m., San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a report of a disturbance in the area of Moon Avenue in Stockton. Upon arrival, a vehicle believed to be involved in the incident fled from the location. A traffic stop was subsequently conducted at the intersection of Wisconsin Avenue and Michigan Avenue. Upon contact with the driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, a deputy observed the driver in possession of what appeared to be a firearm. The deputy discharged his firearm, striking the suspect. Medical aid was immediately rendered, and the suspect was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Please understand that this is an active investigation, and we are unable to release further information at this time. We appreciate the community’s cooperation and patience as investigators work to gather the facts surrounding this incident. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.

The competition was real. The dogs were ready. The San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office K-9 Duke Memorial Trial brought out the best K-9 teams in California, and it did not disappoint. Putting handlers and their partners to the test in everything from obedience and detection to apprehension and agility! Huge thank you to every agency that competed and everyone who came out to support. Until next year! 🐾

Anthony Harris, 40, was arrested on April 17, 2026, in Pleasanton, California, after evidence linked him to a kidnapping and sexual assault case in San Joaquin County from July 2025. We understand the concern cases like this bring to our community. The safety of our residents always remains our top priority. We believe there is a possibility there are additional victims, and we are committed to ensuring this individual is held accountable to the fullest extent of the law. Detectives continue to work closely with partner agencies as this remains an active and ongoing investigation. During National Police Week, the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office honors the brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty and recognizes the unwavering dedication of those who continue to serve our communities every day. This week is a time to remember the fallen, support the surviving families who carry their legacy forward, and thank the deputies, correctional officers, dispatchers, professional staff, and law enforcement partners who answer the call day and night. Behind every badge is a commitment to protect others, even in the face of danger. We are proud to stand alongside the men and women who serve with courage, integrity, and selflessness. To all who wear the badge, and to the families who stand beside them, thank you. Your sacrifice and service will never be forgotten.

Today was set aside to remember those who gave everything. Peace Officer Memorial Day brought our community together to honor every man and woman who fell in the line of duty in San Joaquin County. We joined Stockton Police Department for a countywide ceremony, held our own memorial service at the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office, and closed the day with a visitation to honor our own. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten.

The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office extends our deepest condolences following the tragic loss of Tulare County Sheriff’s Deputy Randy Hoppert. Our hearts are with his family, loved ones, and the entire Tulare County Sheriff’s Office during this incredibly difficult time. Today, we mourn the loss of a deputy who answered the call to serve his community. We grieve alongside his family, who now carry an unimaginable loss, and we stand in solidarity with the men and women of the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office as they navigate this heartbreaking tragedy. This loss is felt far beyond one agency. It impacts the entire law enforcement family. Incidents like this are a sobering reminder of the risks deputies face each day while serving others. Behind every badge is a person who chose a life of service, a family who supports that calling, and a community they work to protect. Deputy Hoppert’s dedication, courage, and commitment to public safety will not be forgotten. On June 1, 2025, what began as a critical incident quickly became a powerful example of courage, teamwork, and selfless service. Last month, Deputy Bergren was recognized by the Tracy Fire Department with a Heroism and Bravery Award for his life-saving actions during that incident. Arriving first on scene to an overturned vehicle in a drainage ditch, Deputy Bergren worked alongside courageous community members to rescue trapped occupants. When one victim was found unresponsive and not breathing in the water, Deputy Bergren helped bring him to safety and immediately began life-saving efforts alongside responding personnel. Because of their swift and decisive actions, the victim regained breathing. We are incredibly proud of Deputy Bergren and grateful for the teamwork shown alongside our partners and community members. This is what it means to serve.

Please join us in welcoming Dillon Huffman to the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office! Dillon joins our agency as a lateral hire and full-time deputy. He recently relocated from Humboldt County, where he spent the past six years serving as a Police Officer with the Eureka Police Department. Prior to that, he worked as a Correctional Deputy with the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office. Before beginning his law enforcement career, Dillon attended Humboldt State University where he studied Criminal Justice and played four years of collegiate football. He made the move to San Joaquin County to be closer to family, as both his family and his fiancé’s family live in or near the area. Outside of work, Dillon enjoys spending time with his family, and getting outdoors whenever he can. Welcome to the team, Dillon!

In March, the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center handled a total of 24,238 calls for service, including 4,984 emergency 9-1-1 calls. These numbers represent more than activity, they reflect moments when our community relied on a calm, steady voice during times of need. We extend our sincere gratitude to our dedicated dispatchers for their professionalism, composure, and unwavering commitment to public safety. Your work behind the scenes is critical to every response, every day. 💛

Earlier this week, the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office reached a major milestone with the opening of the Dorothy J. Heisler Detention and Programs Facility (DAP) in French Camp. This state of the art facility focuses on achieving real results through modern infrastructure. Key features include a dedicated 12 bed mental health unit and expanded classrooms for job skills training in fields like electrical work and construction. Our goal is to reduce recidivism by ensuring individuals return to the community better prepared for the future than when they arrived. We are grateful to our County leadership and partners for their support in making this vision a reality.

Today marks 44 years since we lost two of our own. Deputy Michael Coleman and his father, Floyd Coleman, on the same day, in the same tragedy. Michael joined the Sheriff’s Office as a cadet in 1972, sworn in by Sheriff Michael N. Canlis. When he was promoted to deputy, it was his proud father, Floyd, who pinned the gold star on his chest. That bond between father and son would define their legacy forever. Floyd was no stranger to service himself. A member of the Sheriff’s Auxiliary since 1954, he dedicated decades to this department as our range master. On the afternoon of March 25, 1982, Deputy Coleman was working with the Metropolitan Narcotics Task Force alongside Stockton Police Officer Larry Moore when they moved to serve a warrant in the 2400 block of East Acacia Street. As officers announced themselves at the door, a woman inside opened fire. Though stationed in the front yard without his ballistic vest, Michael moved forward when his fellow officers encountered trouble. Because that’s who he was. He was struck, but despite being mortally wounded, he returned fire, emptying all six rounds from his revolver before collapsing on the front lawn. Floyd was on duty at the department range when word came. Deputies rushed him to St. Joseph’s Hospital. He never made it inside. He suffered a fatal heart attack steps from the door, his heart giving out before he could reach his son. The physician who pronounced Floyd Coleman gone then walked into the next room and pronounced Michael Coleman gone. Five minutes later. They were buried side by side at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Escalon. Our firearms range bears their names, a permanent tribute to a father and son who gave everything to this community. We remember them both. Always.
