I don't want to dunk on the Northwestern J-students, in part because I think we need journalists now more than ever and punching down in his profession is extremely shitty, but I do want to tell a story about why we call people who might not want to be contacted for stories.
Demographic shifts in the city of #STLouis continue. Young adults there are now more likely to have a bachelor’s degree or higher than their peers in the ‘burbs. McPherson’s latest: bit.ly/STLyoung#STL#Census
This was left for the 14th paragraph: "[I]t’s too early to tell exactly what the feds are after, how much they already have or how long the investigation might stretch on." That's the closest the story gets to hard news reporting, & it says a lot about the rest of the piece. 5/5
What the quoted sources have in common is they appear to possess no facts about the focus of this federal inquiry. Most are offered as print journalism equivalents to cable news talking heads, speculating about speculation. Many are the County Executive's political opponents. 4/
The good news in all of this is that Assistant US Attorney Hal Goldsmith is the gold standard for diligent, high integrity investigation. If there was criminal misconduct, he will find it. But he won't be swayed by breathless press coverage. stltoday.com/news/local/gov… via @stltoday

Much rubber-meets-the-road work of official municipal/county level representation + accountability occurs through boards and commissions. Here's a @SaintLouCo list. I'd wager these opportunities for leadership would greatly increase under @BTstl merger. boards.stlouisco.com
@brucefranksjr @BTstl I think the plan does speak to it, but not necessarily by prescribing details of what the community must do. I am writing on a number of issues re the @BTstl initiative, and the opportunity it presents for community to shape policy agendas, including public safety, is coming up.
I have not met or read anything from anyone who opposes @BTstl proposal to end STL City-County separation who has worked for political unification of the City and County or has proposed an alternative for doing so now.
@VirvusJ @eddieroth@BTstl You are a marked exception in such involvement @VirvusJ, although I would note the freeholders were declared unconstitutional 30 years ago, and the unconstitutional aspect was corrected in 1990. Other than @BTstl has there been significant effort to end separation since?
