Saleh El Machnouk: Haykal Must Step Aside On the first day of the fifth round of Lebanese–Israeli negotiations in Washington, the Lebanese military delegation refused to take a commemorative photo with the Israeli delegation. A military source justified the refusal by saying that the success of any negotiations is measured by the results achieved in service of Lebanon, not by commemorative photos or protocol formalities. Commenting on the incident, Saleh El Machnouk said that Army Commander General Rodolphe Haykal should step down. Machnouk argued that Haykal was appointed commander of the Lebanese Army with the mission of containing Hezbollah, but that now, with the mission having become the achievement of sovereignty and peace, he should resign.
