Let's also not forget that after we built the SRT, Ontario Hydro was given permission to give away the old Canadian Northern rail corridor that could have allowed for a fast and cheap subway extension from Kennedy to STC and Malvern. Residents got backyard extensions.
While everyone is pointing fingers at RoFo and a gang of fools who pushed the Scarborough subway scheme, remember that a long time ago, Bill Davis scotched the original LRT scheme for Scarborough and brought us the SRT.

The misappropriation of trams as "rapid transit" will haunt Toronto for decades. While we spend billions replacing suburban bus lines with trams that provide little concrete service improvement, Montreal is building a world-class suburban metro - perfect for car-centric Toronto

Beginning 2024, Instead of using monthly passes, Regional Council has approved "fare capping." This new system aims to make things fairer for everyone and make using public transportation easier. With fare capping, you won't have to pay for a whole month upfront; instead, the system will automatically stop charging you once you reach a certain amount, which is like getting a monthly pass without having to buy one in advance. I began this account in protest of what was happening to the ORBY... It was inevitable with the short sighted intrests at play. Heres hopping for a GO line on the remaining portion from Brampton-Mississauga-Toronto. It's an extremely important connection in its own right.
At least the city of Brampton is holding onto their part. That line couldve helped with TOD, limiting sprawl & centralizing dev on portions of the corridor. I understand much of the northern section was old & the price of modernizing was vast but I feel that we couldve done more.

The greatest part about these changes: it does not require a big city to implement them. In fact, if we can develop and grow strong communities in both small and large municipalities across the GTA, we can control sprawl and hit provincial housing goals smartly and responsibly.
