You know when most people come across "RTGS" in project whitepapers and other places, It sounds like one of those boring bank acronyms, but coming across it in the @GurufinHQ whitepaper indicates something different "TradFi X Defi" The Bedrock for mass adoption So let me break it down🧵👇 RTGS = Real-Time Gross Settlement It sounds really complicated, but each word actually just tells you exactly how it works. Think of it as instant ownership transfer, not just getting a payment notification from Opay or Palmpay. Let's start with the easiest part: Many people think tapping "Send" means the receiver automatically owns the money, but not always. A payment is an instruction, while settlement is when ownership is legally and irrevocably transferred. So until settlement happens, the transfer isn't truly complete. Now Imagine Alice sends Bob ₦500,000. If the bank simply tells Bob: "Alice just sent you money." That's just a message, but Bob doesn't actually own the funds until the banks settle the transaction, so settlement is what makes the transfer final. Now let's talk about Gross Gross means that every transaction is settled one by one, supposing a bank has to process: • ₦10M • ₦2M • ₦500K RTGS doesn't wait to combine them into one big transfer, No, each payment is settled separately. This reduces dependency between transactions and makes settlement final for each one. What does Real-Time actually mean? Now, here's where many people get it wrong. Real-Time doesn't always mean instant. It means the system starts processing your transaction immediately after it is received. So the actual completion still depends on things like: • Available funds • Compliance checks • System availability So why do banks and users love RTGS? Because with RTGS, Payment is final, and It can't simply be reversed And there is also little to no settlement risk, and that's why RTGS is used for: • Interbank transfers • High-value payments • Government settlements • Central bank operations Now here's where this connects to Gurufin Most blockchains also aim for final settlement, but they achieve it differently. Ethereum relies on decentralized consensus, while RTGS relies on trusted traditional financial institutions and central bank infrastructure Same goal, but different trust model This is exactly why projects like Gurufin who is positioned to be the settlement hub for cross border FX transactions mention RTGS in their whitepaper. They're not trying to replace blockchain technology, they're only just trying to bring the reliability and settlement guarantees that traditional financial systems offer into Web3. That's a much more ambitious goal than simply building another payment chain. So Next time you see RTGS, don't just think: "Fast bank transfer." Think: A system where each payment is processed individually, ownership is transferred with finality, and settlement risk is minimized.
