The most disturbing anecdote in this essay is from a grade-school teacher saying that on their first day of school kids used to cry because they missed their moms, and now they cry because they don’t have their tablets. If this isn’t fixed, it means civilizational collapse.
@SketchesbyBoze A huge problem I'm seeing surrounding this is that a number of people are calling it The Hobbit and then describing it as if it was The Lord of the Rings or maybe even the silmarillion. Read the first page and see simple clear language
I read it when I was 9. Very definitely a children's book understandable by children. It's just that a lot of people back then had more faith in what children could read than now. Compare McGuffey Readers to what is presented now in an age where adults have less faith in children understanding vocabulary or benefiting from explaining unpleasant topics.
The Hobbit is a children’s book, and the fact that so many grown people find the syntax and language difficult just further shows how far we’ve fallen from a cliff intellectually since it was first published in 1937.
@bazashc Have you ever read it??? It’s 100% not a children’s book and whoever says that is lying to you. Not only is the vernacular dated and elaborate but the sentence structure and lengthy writing is often hard to get your head around as an adult. Love that book! but it’s not for kids

It’s hard to imagine a worse 2 days for Nigel Farage. He resigned as MP for Clacton thinking it would be a masterstroke, and it’s turned into the opposite. Every major party pulled out, leaving him fighting Count Binface, and his own spokespeople have spent that time embarrassing themselves trying to defend it. There’s no way back now. And still, defiantly, Reform is uploading full campaign videos like they’re not in a contest with a bin. Being hated is one thing. Being laughed at is the end.
