There is no genocide, and there never has been — in Gaza, at least — and the serious people, the honest voices not trying to curry favor or build a brand, know it. This person, who portrays herself as an academic, a dispassionate investigator of the truth, is anything but. She’s a purveyor of radical chic, which would be fine if the future, that of millions of Palestinians she couldn’t care less about, were not at stake. There’s no discussion here — or anywhere else in the wider Free Palestine pseudo-discourse — about the definition of “genocide,” or what distinguishes genocide from war, or why this war has become the cause celebre for status-conscious sociopaths (see, for example, Platner, Piker, Khanna, the crazy UN lady et al.). There’s just signaling and a great deal of fraudulent emotion meant to convey authenticity. To buttress their claim that the Jewish state is uniquely evil, the brand-builders often cite cherry-picked stats or link to this or that statement or article care of one of their favored human-rights organizations or academics (preferably Israeli). They’re just recycling opinion, laundering propaganda created by other Hamasniks and strivers and fashion-surfers. Which, again, wouldn’t be a big deal if the children for whom they’re constantly shedding tears weren’t counting on the proverbial adults to save them from the terrorists.
