Moslimhaat is het nieuwe antisemitisme. De geschiedenis laat zien hoe gevaarlijk het is wanneer een diverse bevolkingsgroep wordt gereduceerd tot één kwaadaardige macht. In de VS groeit de vijandigheid tegenover moslims en ook hier zien we de ontwikkeling. Dat is zeer zorgelijk.

The accusation that I am antisemitic is appalling and fundamentally dishonest. Criticizing the actions of the Israeli prime minister, a military technology contract, or the executives who supply it is not the same as criticizing Jewish people. This critical and necessary dialogue is then dishonestly framed as being anti-Israel. To be clear, my views come from my own political convictions and should never be interpreted as hostility toward Jewish people, for whom I have deep love and respect.  Everything I know about acting, activism, and humanism has been profoundly shaped by the Jewish friends, colleagues, and loved ones who have been integral and family throughout every point of my life. This merger has real consequences for real people, and for the entire country. Scrutinizing the Ellisons, including Oracle’s business built on data, surveillance technology and government contracts, and the serious threat to editorial freedom and the loss of a livelihood for thousands of families, is fair and necessary. The $111 billion deal would hand one family control over CNN, HBO and Warner Bros., backed in part by foreign money whose influence on editorial decisions has never been fully explained to the public.  Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have called for serious national security review, and regulators still haven’t given the public a real answer. Until they do, the merger shouldn’t move forward. Now is the time to dive boldly into all these issues, not step back or concede.

History holds many truths. Everyone wants their version of the story to prevail. Yet there is no need to keep pointing to the past—it is over, and no one knows with certainty what truly took place. What we can be sure of are the occupations and imperialism we have witnessed firsthand over the past century—especially in the last two decades. Even if attempts are made to shift the focus onto Muslims, the whole world knows the real bloodshedders.

You talk about possible deeds during wars. Leaving aside how gruesome the Crusades were, what do we say about what has happened in our time, right now, recently? Why don’t you talk about the Muslims who recently bombed children to shreds? Or is a rocket less bad than a one-on-one fight with a sword? And doesn’t the murder of children, women and innocent men count as gruesome? But wait a minute—those last ones weren’t Muslims.

Waarom doe je precies datgene wat je langzaam vernietigt? Je zit in de problemen. Je bent overbelast. En in plaats van het probleem aan te pakken, doe je het tegenovergestelde. Je trekt je terug. Je blijft piekeren. Je vlucht in een verslaving. Je overeet jezelf of je eet juist helemaal niets. Je scrolt eindeloos. Het voelt zo zacht. Zo veilig. Alsof je even mag verdwijnen. Maar het is geen troost. Het is een leugen die je jezelf vertelt. Je dempt de pijn voor even en maakt het probleem intussen groter. Dieper. Zwaarder. Je maakt je probleem nu alleen maar groter en de schade op lange termijn is erger dan het korte gevecht. Stop ermee. Confronteer het probleem door het recht in de ogen te zien. Begin stap per stap. Een kleine stap is beter dan stilstaan of dieper wegzakken. Je komt er wel door.

Who says that? Islam — or rather the Quran itself — opens its longest chapter with the words: “This is the Book about which there is no doubt.” A little further on it challenges: “And if you are in doubt about what We have sent down upon Our Servant, then produce a chapter the like thereof and call upon your witnesses other than God, if you should be truthful..” The Book actively invites sceptics and critics to question and reflect. Sadly, for many people, thinking for themselves is simply too painful. Yet there is always hope for the honest optimists.

You’re probably referring to a verse from the Quran that speaks about an action that had to be carried out against the unbelievers during a battle. It was war. Some of our own ancestors in the last century were also ordered to go from being farmers one day to killing the next — because it was war. Tearing things out of their historical context only leads to dishonest debates. And did you know that the uncle of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) — the man who was his guardian and whom he loved so deeply — was himself an unbeliever?

His skin colour, name, origin, or whatever he shouts or sings during his crime is completely irrelevant. It is the individual crime that must be punished severely. By endlessly listing irrelevant details that are not crimes themselves, you are simply dodging the real issue. I, together with hundreds of millions of practising Muslims — far outnumbering the few (minus thousands psyops) extremists — say this loud and clear: “Punish every criminal hard, solely on the basis of their crime, regardless of their background or religion.” So tell me: according to your own logic, why aren’t all Muslims good people?
