🦔 Researchers at Aikido Security found 151 malicious packages uploaded to GitHub between March 3 and March 9. The packages use Unicode characters that are invisible to humans but execute as code when run. Manual code reviews and static analysis tools see only whitespace or blank lines. The surrounding code looks legitimate, with realistic documentation tweaks, version bumps, and bug fixes. Researchers suspect the attackers are using LLMs to generate convincing packages at scale. Similar packages have been found on NPM and the VS Code marketplace. My Take Supply chain attacks on code repositories aren't new, but this technique is nasty. The malicious payload is encoded in Unicode characters that don't render in any editor, terminal, or review interface. You can stare at the code all day and see nothing. A small decoder extracts the hidden bytes at runtime and passes them to eval(). Unless you're specifically looking for invisible Unicode ranges, you won't catch it. The researchers think AI is writing these packages because 151 bespoke code changes across different projects in a week isn't something a human team could do manually. If that's right, we're watching AI-generated attacks hit AI-assisted development workflows. The vibe coders pulling packages without reading them are the target, and there are a lot of them. The best defense is still carefully inspecting dependencies before adding them, but that's exactly the step people skip when they're moving fast. I don't really know how any of this gets better. Se você parar pra observar o que está acontecendo vai perceber que Epstein simplesmente mudou a indústria inteira de computação. Lembra quando jailbreak ficava concentrado em três ou quatro pesquisadores fortes de segurança no iPhone? Era até meio piada, saía versão nova do iOS ou hardware novo do iPhone, e em poucas semanas já tinha jailbreak e zero day rolando. Porque os caras pegavam beta de desenvolvimento, testavam tudo, achavam falha, não reportavam nada e quando o produto saía já vinha vulnerável. Eles já sabiam exatamente onde atacar. Era espetáculo mesmo, humilhação pública pra Apple, incômodo grande, e os jailbreak eram abertos, públicos. Do nada tudo mudou. Um pouco por causa do Secure Enclave sim, mas nem tanto assim. Jailbreak untethered virou raridade e os hackers simplesmente pararam de soltar zero day. Também vale lembrar que muita gente da cena jailbreak acabou ficando receosa principalmente por causa do risco jurídico, a Apple passou a pressionar forte, processos caros, equipes jurídicas gigantes, isso naturalmente desestimula quem antes publicava exploits de forma aberta. No fim, mais do que questões técnicas ou mercado cinza, o medo real de enfrentar ações judiciais pesadas e custos absurdos com advogados acabou pesando bastante pra vários desses desenvolvedores. Ao mesmo tempo surgiram três empresas israelenses produtizando exploit, a mais famosa Cellebrite UFED, as outras a gente conhece de nome também. Depois ficamos sabendo que praticamente todos aqueles devs conhecidos ao menos por handle de internet passaram a trabalhar nessas empresas israelenses. E agora apareceu que o Jeffrey Epstein articulava isso pessoalmente. Ele direcionava pedido de palestra tanto na Blackhat quanto na DEFCON, influenciava quais talks seriam aprovadas, e quando essa galera aparecia ele fazia contato, vinha proposta, e assim ele moldou a indústria. O que era diversão aberta e pública virou produto caro vendido pra governo, polícia, exército, inteligência, ou qualquer um disposto a pagar se o vendedor tivesse interesse. Eu tô de cara, o sujeito (Epstein) mexeu em tudo. Influenciou decisões no desenvolvimento do bitcoin, no próprio Tor também. A relação dele com Stallman vem de muito tempo, não foi à toa que o RMS defendeu ele publicamente lá em 2019 quando rolou aquele afastamento por causa das acusações envolvendo defesa do amigo Einstein. Hoje sabemos que praticamente tudo que o Ito decidia no MIT Media Lab tinha dedo do Epstein. A galera de software livre, principalmente GNU, tá bem incomodada, não é só pessoal do bitcoin não. Quem é de segurança da informação e não ficou incomodado tem problema, porque motivo pra ficar bolado tem de sobra nesses Epstein files. É surreal.
