💔💔💔💔I am absolutely devastated by the tragic passing of Professor Jason Arday. I had been collaborating with Jason on promoting his new memoir, Great and Unfortunate Things, and was so looking forward to helping him and his extraordinary mother, Gif, share their story…a story of autism, adversity, faith, a mother’s fierce determination, and a young boy who defied every limitation placed upon him to become a professor at Cambridge. These were the words I had written for the back of his book: “As the mother of a child on the spectrum, I was reminded once again that there is nothing more fierce than a mother’s determination to see her child receive the services and attention he deserves; nothing more inspiring than a stranger with nothing to gain who asks anyway, ‘How can I help?’; and nothing more empowering than intervention combined with positivity, love and grit. Read this book and prepare to be inspired.” I never imagined those words would now feel like part of a farewell. Whatever questions surrounded Jason’s professional life, nothing justified the relentless public humiliation, online cruelty and dehumanization he endured. We must remember that behind every headline and every social media pile-on is a whole human being!…with a heart, a family and a breaking point. Words have weight. Cruelty has consequences. Jason was only 41. His life mattered. His journey mattered. And the story he and his mother fought so hard to create still matters. My heart is shattered for Gif, his wife, his children and everyone who loved him. I am so deeply sorry, Jason. May you finally rest in peace. 💔🕊️

Robert Smalls was born into slavery in Beaufort, South Carolina, in 1839, but by the time the Civil War began, he had developed an extraordinary knowledge of Charleston Harbor and the ships that moved through it. That knowledge would eventually become the key to one of the most daring escapes from slavery in American history. On May 13, 1862, Smalls was working aboard the Confederate transport ship Planter. While the ship’s white officers were ashore, Smalls and several other enslaved crewmen took control of the vessel. Smalls dressed in the captain’s uniform and hat, took command of the ship, and carefully guided it past Confederate defenses. His wife, children, and the families of the other men were also aboard, meaning the escape was not simply about reaching freedom for himself. The people on that ship were risking everything together. Smalls knew that one mistake could mean capture or death. He had to navigate through Confederate-controlled waters and pass Fort Sumter before reaching the Union blockade outside Charleston. When the Planter finally reached Union forces, Smalls and those aboard were free. The captured vessel and its cargo were also valuable to the Union war effort. Smalls’ knowledge of Confederate defenses was so useful that he was later recruited by the Union Navy and eventually became captain of the Planter. His wartime career was only the beginning. After the Civil War, Smalls returned to South Carolina and became deeply involved in politics during Reconstruction. He served in the South Carolina legislature and was eventually elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, where he served five terms. He also became a businessman and purchased the Beaufort home where he had once been enslaved. That detail alone captures the extraordinary transformation of his life, but Robert Smalls should not be remembered simply as a man who escaped slavery. He was a sailor, military leader, politician, businessman and political advocate who continued fighting for Black freedom and citizenship long after the Civil War ended. His story shows that freedom was not merely something enslaved people waited to receive. People like Smalls actively fought, planned, risked their lives and created opportunities to seize it. Children need to be read aloud to — and so do adults. When rich language goes in through the ear, it settles deep inside, and what settles in comes back out on the page. The best writers were first the best listeners. And if you're dealing with dyslexia, the ear is your best ally. Never let a dyslexic child see a spelling list before they've heard it. Sound before sight — hearing the words first gives them a far better chance of holding on.
