Banksy unmasked: Reuters identifies him as Robin Gunningham (now David Jones) After a years-long deep-dive investigation, Reuters has concluded that the elusive street artist Banksy is Robin Gunningham - a Bristol-born graffiti artist (b. 1973). The report says Gunningham legally changed his name to David Jones around 2008, apparently to reinforce his long-standing anonymity after earlier speculation surfaced.This aligns with a 2008 Mail on Sunday exposé that first named Gunningham as Banksy. Reuters strengthened the case with new/old evidence: a 2000 New York arrest record (including Gunningham’s signed handwritten confession), geolocation matches to Banksy-related photos and timing, travel records, witness interviews, and more.Much of this material had already trickled out in pieces between 2023-2025 but lacked final confirmation - until now. Banksy has made no public comment on the report.
