Russia has stepped up large-scale hybrid and disinformation campaigns in Germany ahead of state elections. The operation, known as "Matryoshka," after the Russian nesting doll, or "Operation Overload," aims to discredit democratic politicians, undermine trust in elections, and strengthen pro-Russian forces. According to Reuters, German security services say Russian information attacks primarily target political opponents of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD). Russian-linked resources seek to discredit members of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), its coalition partner, the Social Democratic Party (SPD), as well as the Greens and the Free Democratic Party (FDP). To do this, the campaign uses a network of fake accounts and clone websites. Russian-linked resources mostly spread English-language videos on social media using fake logos of major international media outlets, including the BBC, ARD, and DW. The videos make fabricated allegations against local politicians. The fake reports are also being used to deepen divisions between eastern and western Germany. German authorities believe the campaigns are being ⁠centrally orchestrated from Russia using a number of companies. 📹: DW
