Been here since I was a young adult in 1981 & have never bought a Us automaker car. Used to be I just felt German cars or Hondas were better in the 1980s & later Toyota loyalist for the “city car” since the 1990s for same reason. Since 2010 won’t buy a US made car as a matter of principle: GM is a company that screwed pensioners to survive the 2000s, then used the GFC as an excuse to play it for social welfare & succeeded at that too. They got the bailout, some of which was structured as TARP type loans which bridged big banks through the crisis. Banks paid all of it back, GM & F didn’t pay a single dollar back. Then GM & F survived the 2010s by screwing their own dealers, jamming fleet supplies & binding dealers to finance their fleets at the parent cos. usurious rates. Then they used the COVID crisis to pimp out the Biden admin for non-recourse grants to build out EV fleets, which they got w/ no strings attached. And today, as I write, they still make shitty cars. A far worse value proposition than Toyota or Honda.
Obama basically sealed the deal that Dems would get slaughtered in the 2010 midterms with 2 moves. 1. The ACA. 2. The auto industry bailout. Conservatives campaigned successfully to characterize both as socialism. As per the auto industry bailout, they were right. It was just a foul moral hazard all along, but Obama & Co. understood that the post GFC US economy could not bear that industrial drawdown. Then Michigan voters showed their gratitude by helping elect Trump twice & here you have the CEO of GM, a company that survived off that moral hazard & never paid a single dollar of bailout loans back to @USTreasury, stumping at a partisan political rally for Trump? Sweet Jesus, what a fuck all. Unforgivable.
