Across 9 countries, SoilValues has established 12 Communities of Practice, creating spaces for knowledge exchange, collaboration and joint problem-solving. By working together, stakeholders can identify shared challenges, develop practical solutions and lay the foundations for long-term action beyond the lifetime of the project. Working collaboratively, the CoP is identifying the main barriers to the uptake of these practices while developing practical solutions. 🌱 Yesterday, SoilValues took part in the first Mission Soil Investment Forum 2026 in Brussels, joining researchers, policymakers, investors and innovators to explore how new business models and investments can accelerate the transition towards healthy soils. We were proud to contribute to the program with three inspiring speakers: 🎤Dr. Kato Van Ruymbeke (KU Leuven) took part in the opening session, highlighting the importance of combining scientific knowledge on soil health with the social and relational dimensions that enable sustainable business models to succeed. 🎤 Prof. Erik Mathijs (KU Leuven) moderated the thematic session "From Field to Finance: Innovation, Philanthropy and Living Labs as Investment Enablers", exploring how collaboration across value chains can unlock investment opportunities for soil health. 🎤 Ennio Facq (ILVO) presented a SoilValues case study during the Pitch Session, showing how regional farm composting initiatives can generate societal value while supporting farmers and promoting collective action for healthier soils. The discussions throughout the day reinforced a shared message: investing in soil health means investing in resilient food systems, thriving communities and a more sustainable future. The Polish Testing Ground: Building the SOILPROFIT Business Model At our Polish Testing Ground, partners are working together to build a resilient and sustainable sugar beet value chain that supports both farmers and the environment. At the heart of the Testing Ground is the development of SOILPROFIT, an innovative business model designed to accelerate the transition to regenerative agriculture. By bringing together farmers and other members of the value chain, SOILPROFIT aims to secure a stable supply of sugar beet while protecting natural resources and promoting long-term environmental sustainability. The model explores practical ways to overcome barriers to adoption, including mechanisms that support and reward farmers for implementing regenerative practices. The workshop focused on incentives for environmental practices and carbon farming, exploring the latest developments in European regulations, the role of carbon farming within the CAP, and different compensation mechanisms supporting the transition towards more sustainable agricultural systems. Yet, participation in voluntary schemes remains lower than expected. Our latest research explores why. Based on interviews with Danish land managers, the study shows that decisions are not driven by economics alone. Farmers balance financial considerations with family heritage, attachment to place, autonomy, and the day-to-day realities of running a farm. At the same time, practical barriers, from administrative complexity to land fragmentation and policy uncertainty, can make participation challenging 👉 Key takeaway: increasing uptake requires more than financial incentives. The meeting provided an opportunity to share concrete results in promoting and implementing regenerative practices across their respective institutions and sectors. From educational programmes to demonstration farms, the Alliance’s activities are steadily expanding across Serbia. We spoke with Andrés Rodriguez-Seijo, coordinator of InBestSoil, about the real costs of establishing soil health business models and the importance of sharing risks and investments among farmers, local public actors, and other stakeholders. He also reflects on the need to better recognise the many ecosystem services provided by healthy soils that often remain invisible in economic terms. Virginia Sánchez Navarro, coordinator of Lighthouse 2, takes us to a former uranium mining area where soils face multiple risks: pollution, metallic contamination, hyper-acidification, and low nutrient levels. She explains how phytostabilisation approaches — combining metal-tolerant plants with organic and inorganic amendments — are being tested to reduce contamination and restore soil functions. We also hear from Austra Zuševica, coordinator of Lighthouse 6, who shares experience from a gravel mining site affected by erosion and flooding, where restoration efforts focus on fertilisation and tree planting as first steps towards rebuilding soil structure. Finally, Chiara De Notaris reflects on what the upcoming Soil Monitoring Law could mean for farmers in practice and which policy choices could help accelerate private investment in soil health.
