However, if you had no other primary residence, and you stayed long enough to establish residency (30 to 90 days is the cutoff) they would have to formally evict you

It is not vandalism, because the house remains intact. It is not trespassing, if the tenant has established residency.

@RexieSquad @kdb_peak @zillowgonewild You have every right to protect your real property, keep it locked and secured, and prevent inhabitation. The state is not obligated to treat your failure to do so as a crime; if the tenancy is found illegitimate, the state will act to evict the tenant.

In common law jurisdictions, at least. Civil law, I'm less familiar with.

And it's quite hard for the IRS to take your primary residence; they can only do so if you have literally no other assets they can seize to pay taxes.
