My father once told me the secret to a happy marriage. “Stay out of the kitchen. Let her handle the holidays.” I was 19. He was in his recliner. My mother was cooking for 14 people. She’d been up since 5 AM. He’d been up since the football pregame. I didn’t think anything of it. That’s just how it was. Fast forward 20 years. I’m in the recliner. My wife is in the kitchen. She’s been up since 5 AM. I’ve been up since the pregame. My daughter walks by and I see her watching. Not the TV. Her mother. Then me. Then her mother again. That’s when it hit me: She’s taking notes. My father taught me that holidays were for men to rest and women to work. He didn’t say it. He showed it. Every Thanksgiving. Every Christmas. Every Easter. The recliner passed from him to me like an inheritance I never asked for. This morning I woke up at 4 AM. Not for content. For the turkey. My wife found me in the kitchen at 6. She didn’t say anything. She just stood there. Then she cried. Your kids are taking notes. Not on what you say. On where you sit. The recliner is an inheritance. Be the generation that stands up.

Scientists say women hit their highest stress when their husbands are on the couch doing nothing. I didn’t need a study. I lived it. Early in our marriage, I thought being home meant I’d “earned” the rest. Joy would be in the kitchen, folding laundry, tending kids, doing ten things at once. I’d be on the couch. Remote in hand. Feet up. Then one night I looked up and saw her. Really saw her. Tired eyes. Heavy shoulders. And I remembered something Scripture says plain: “Husbands, love your wives as Christ loved the church.” Christ didn’t love by sitting back. He loved by stepping in. So I stood up. Not out of guilt. Out of obedience. Men, your home is watching. Your children are watching. Your wife is watching. Get off the couch. Love her the way Christ loved you.

I went to a funeral last spring. Guy from church. 58 years old. Heart attack at his desk. The pastor said he was a hard worker. A provider. His wife said he gave everything to his career. His kids didn't speak. I watched them. Sitting in the front row. Staring straight ahead. They weren't crying. They'd already grieved. Years ago. When he missed the games. When he chose the office. When he was there but wasn't. He died on a Tuesday. They lost him long before. I sat in my car after and made a list. What would my kids say? Not what I hope they'd say. What they'd actually say. Based on evidence. Based on where I sit. Based on what I choose. I didn't like the list. So I started changing it. One decision at a time. Your kids are writing your eulogy right now. Every day you give them new material. What are they going to say? That you provided? Or that you were there? You don't get to edit it later. The funeral is just the reading. The writing is today.

Men are humans. Women are humans And none is infallible. I love to see more of my last 2 reposts.

Let's focus on empowering men to be their best selves: confident, loving, and disciplined. If we expect loyalty from men, let's make sure we're showing it too. It's time to ditch the negative stereotypes and support each other in growth and self-improvement.

Men have been getting a bad rap for far too long, portrayed as one-dimensional stereotypes in media - sexually weak, classless, and lacking discipline. These traits aren't exclusive to men. We're all human, capable of greatness and flaws.

My daughter stopped running to the door. I don't know when it happened. One day she was five, sprinting down the hallway the second she heard my keys. "DADDY'S HOME!" Every single day. It was annoying sometimes. I had bags to put down. Emails to check. Dinner to get started. "Give me a second, sweetheart." She'd wait. Then she'd stop waiting. I came home last Tuesday. Keys in the door. Silence. She was on the couch. Glanced up. "Hey." Then back to her phone. I stood there. Bags in hand. Waiting for something that wasn't coming. That's when I realized: She didn't stop running to the door. I trained her to stop. Every "give me a second." Every half-hug while looking at my phone. Every "not right now, honey." A thousand tiny rejections. Until she got the message. Daddy's home. But he's not really here. So why bother? I put my bags down. Walked over. Sat next to her. "I'm sorry I stopped being excited to see you." She looked at me like I was crazy. "What?" "I used to run to you too. I stopped first. You just followed." She didn't say anything. But she put her phone down. Your kids stop running to the door when you stop being worth running to. It happens slowly. Then all at once. And one day you'll come home to silence. Wondering what happened. You happened. The next time you walk through that door— Put down your phone before you put down your bags. Look them in the eyes before you check your inbox. Run to them first. Before they forget how.

My mother didn't speak to me for three months. Not after a fight. After a prayer. I told her I was raising my kids differently. No more passive faith. No more "we're Christian because we say we are." No more church twice a year and Jesus when it's convenient. She took it personally. "What's wrong with how I raised you?" Everything. And nothing. She did her best. But her best was Sunday mornings and silent dinners. A Bible on the shelf, never opened. A father who said grace but never led. A family that looked Christian in the Christmas photo. And fell apart behind closed doors. I didn't want that for my kids. So I started leading my home. Family worship on Wednesdays. Praying with my wife every morning. Teaching my son what it means to be a man of God—not just a man who goes to church. My extended family thinks I've lost my mind. "You've become one of those people." Holiday dinners are quieter now. Some aunts don't call anymore. My brother thinks I'm judging him. I'm not. I'm just not pretending anymore. Jesus said it would be like this. "I did not come to bring peace, but a sword." "A man's enemies will be the members of his own household." I used to read that and think it was metaphor. It's not. Following Him cost me the family I was born into. But it gave me the family I'm building. Last Wednesday my daughter asked if we could pray for her cousin. The one whose parents are divorcing. She folded her hands. Closed her eyes. And talked to God like He was listening. Because in our house, He is. My mother still doesn't understand. Maybe she never will. But my daughter will never wonder if her father loved God. She'll never guess if faith was real in our home. She'll know. Because she watched it. Every night. Every prayer. Every Christ-centered Christ-led ordinary Tuesday. The family I lost? They had my past. The family I'm raising? They have my future. And my children's children will know the Lord. Because someone decided the cycle stops here. Even if it cost him Thanksgiving dinner. Even if it cost him his mother's approval. Some inheritances are worth losing. So your kids can gain the only one that matters.
