The Catholic Church has already spoken definitively on this. Mormons are not Christians theologically. They may have some Christian characteristics in morality and terminology, but their baptisms are not accepted by Rome.

Clement of Rome's letter to the Corinthians in 96 AD was not a friendly suggestion but an authoritative directive. Think about what was happening when Clement wrote. The Corinthian church had deposed its legitimate elders. A schism had broken out. And the Bishop of Rome wrote to correct it, commanding them to restore proper order. Not asking. Commanding. Here is the detail that should stop every Protestant cold. The Apostle John was still alive. His church in Ephesus was active. If the early Christians operated on a flat, congregationalist model where every church governed itself by Scripture alone, why did a church in crisis not appeal to the living Apostle a few hundred miles away? Why did Rome write to Corinth at all? And more importantly: why did Corinth obey? The letter was preserved. It was read in Corinthian churches for generations. Clement did not write as a fellow brother offering thoughts. He wrote as one whose authority the Corinthians recognized, whose correction they received. This is not a Catholic reading of history. This is the history itself. The Protestant model of church governance requires you to believe that a hierarchical, Roman-centered authority structure appeared suddenly and without resistance sometime after the apostles. But the apostles were still alive when that structure was already functioning. What does your church do with that?

There’s a great scene in Downton Abbey about the first time the King of England did a radio address in the early 1900s. The matriarch of the family nailed it on the head when she said that the radio address would lead to a place in culture where the mystery, aura, and majesty of the crown would be downgraded to a kind of sideshow act. This obviously has come true in the modern age. I wish the Pope spent far less time in front of cameras and crowds for this very reason. I don’t want the successor of Peter doing the ‘6-7’ like a mindless teenager. This all cheapens and lowers the office that Christ established. I want him in the Chair of Peter with the Papal Tiara on his head.

The Catholic Church’s official name is the Catholic Church. The Roman or Latin Church is the largest of the 24 Catholic Churches, and its head is the universal head of the church. Since most Catholics are Roman Catholic, most people just say Roman Catholic Church. But to be Catholic does not necessarily mean one is Roman or Latin.
